cleaning an AFM hotwire - WD40 etc ok to use?

Not for the skyline but another car I own with a hotwire afm. I think its covered in oil and I want to clean it to try and sort an occasional dodgy high idle.

not sure what the hotwire is made of or if covering it in brake cleaner or WD40 would be fatal.

Anyone got any idvice?

Thanks
Martin

Carb cleaner is the stuff to use IIRC. Although I might be wrong.

Martin,

A GENTLE application of carb cleaner will do the trick. Dont be tempted to try doing it on the car either. Take the AFM off, and spray gently over the wire, so the excess runs straight out through the body.

Your high idle is probably due to a sticky idle valve. Again, clean with carb cleaner.

Regards

Thanks chaps. The thing is, the hot wore appears to be connected onto the throttle meaning removing it would be a swine. I can get good access to it and just after it is the butterfly meaning nothing will get past that so i could just mop up any residue after.

I dont have any carb cleaner - nor any carbs for that matter so it would be a shame to have to buy some just for this. WOuld any alternative b ok - such as wd40 - brake cleaner / engine degreasant ie gunk?

or does it have to be that stuff?

cheers for the info so far

cheers

only use carb cleaner. wd40 is NOT the same.

for the damage you could do, a couple of quid on a can of carb cleaner is no expense.

in my punto days, we just sprayed the AFM with carb cleaner, engine running!

lol

As said above, carb cleaner is the thing to use, definitely not WD40.

I don't understand what you are saying about the hot wire being connected onto the throttle. Unless you're using some kind of blow through system, the AFMs are located just after the air filter/s. I would definitely take them off to clean them. They're pretty straighforward to remove.

Think I will pop down halfrauds and get some carb cleaner. Will do the idle control valve too then.
