aftermarket cambelt
When i get my car i'm planning to change the cambelt along with service. Now i've noticed that a lot of guys use aftermarket cambelts, such as tomie. Are the OEM cambelts not very reliable, or are aftermarket belts just so much better? there seems to be a large difference in price and i just want to know if the extra price is justified and also to gauge some opinion from people.

I bought a Greddy Kevlar belt . . .
Also changed the pulleys to Greddy adjustable one's & fitted new tensioners for good measure! It all looked sooo blue and pretty, so i bought a clear Greddy cam belt cover so my girlfriend could see what i'd spent my money on! M P.S My car has done 50,000 miles. |

An OE Nissan belt is fine..... I'd only fit an aftermarket belt if the engine was fitted with lairy cams and / or had a higher rev limit.
Also, the tensioner and guide roller should be changed at the same time as the belt ![]() |

That the cam belt was fitted with a new tensioner and to the correct tension accoring to my R34 GTR workshop manual. The car was used for about 3000 road miles including 2 track days. I wanted to replace my cams to stage 1's after all this and so decided to remove the belt in anticipation of the new cams turning up . To see how the belt had lasted, I check the tension again BEFORE removing the belt, and it was exctly as I had fitted it a few months before. I guess it could be argued that had the tension changed in the interim, it could also be down to wear in the belt tensioner? Just my opinion based on my car. From what I can tell the belt is under most stress at idle and cranking speeds (Im guessing less inertia on the cams)
I say this cos allmost evey engine I have worked on with a failed belt happened as ppl where just starting the car or just setting off from a junction, Only seen one belt fail at high revs and it took 10 of the 16 valves and the head with it. Right now I use a good quality Powergrip belt as I change each year anyhow If I was running an expensive modded engine tho, I would buy the best belt I could find Mark ![]() |
