Hi guys
Have searched and c ome up with loads on engine oil temps. But i have a question about water temps. Below is a pic of my dashboard during normal driving in urban areas. ![]() The temperature gauge is always in this position, whether in urban areas or open road, at day and at night, medium and low speeds. The gauge reads cold when started and gradually warms up, so i know the gauge is working. Faulty i'm not sure about, but working it is. The car is an R32 fitted with a Calsonic radiator and aftermarket intercooler. Stage 1 mods pushing about 260kW so nothing serious. Running standard boost. My engine oil temperature, according to the factory gauge on the dashboard is around 80-85 degrees. Does this seem normal? |

It does seem high on the gauge, but that's probably an accuracy thing, from your description it would suggest that all is well. (I don't have an R32, so don't know what's normal, the R33 stays near the middle of the scale, well it did before I fitted the Nismo t/stat, now a little lower.)
oil temps are normal, for normal driving. Oil pressure seems a little low? What does it go up to at 4000rpm? |

Looks slightly high doesnt it.
Maybe do a coolant flush? Bleed the system through again? Might be worth a try, seeing as it'll only cost you a few minutes and some antifreeze. Although living in South Africa maybe antifreeze isnt that big an issue, lol Jeff PS Calsonic radiators are the standard item. |

The thermostat opens to allow water through the radiator. If the ambient air temperature cooling the water in the radiator is higher - stands to reason that the ambient water temperature will be higher surely?

no, not quite. The t/stat isn't on/off, it's variable. The hotter the engine gets, the more it opens, but should reach a set temperature (the designed operating temp), regardless of the ambient temp. It's true to say the t/stat will be wider open in high ambient temps conditions, as the rad will be less efficient.

You could fit the Nismo Stat,
Also check the conections on the sender. When I had the R32 engine in the R33 the Temp sender was different which made the Temp read out move higher than it should, swap the R33 one back and the Gague was back to normal Nigel

I recently purchased a GTR32 ....i saw that the temp was bang on Half way on the water guage .....It was running the normal dials at the time ....so I decide to put in some nismo 320 km dials and the bloody thing whent to 3/4 on the guage ...
you know ...there is something psycological about temp guages reading high if you know what I mean ...I have a 33 gtr with a large rad and a large ol oil cooler and they both just make 80 degrees ish ....all the time .... I think the only way to get accurate readings is with good quality after market guages ... my thoughts purely ... cheers Gary |

I checked the oil pressure under driving conditions. At about 4,000 rpm and above, the oil pressure is just below the 4 mark, so i would say around 3,9. I am due for an oil change soon and will keep an eye on pressures after that has been done. Struggling to get hold of a decent 10W50 or 15W50 here in South Africa, because they have to import them. We get a whole bunch of Shell Helix, Mobil 1, Castrol RS, Castrol TXT - fully synthetics but the ratings are all mostly 0W40 or 5W40 and from reading Oilman's posts, i gather that these may be way too thin. The oils mentioned above retail for around USD55 equivalent here. How does that compare with your prices? (Obviously, a specificly imported oil is going to set me back quite a bit more) |
