gearbox/transfer box cooler, big thanks for advise to nik wilson.

hi all...just finished my tests with the above. basically pm,ed nik for some advice then created my own kit, for the gearbox and transfer box on my 33gtr. on trackdays i noticed how hot the gear lever became and suspect [just might thoughts only] that with all the gearbox failures around oil temps could have a part to play in this. so not wanting a gearbox rebuild decided to do as nik has done and fit coolers.

so the basic idea is two s13 diff pumps, two s13 diff coolers, two surface mounted 100deg switches, two relays and 43 ft of pipework. plus fittings for the drains and fillers of both gearbox and transfer.

so in order to check the usefullness of the above i wired two lights in the car wired to the two pumps, enabling me to cheque when they are activated.

as said both temperature switches are set to 100 degrees, on the way back from totb4 and being a little spirited the gearbox cooler came on. but no transfer?. whilst out yesterday in the industrial park, and giving the gearbox a hard time both cooler pumps came on. the final test will be at trax. so stay posted.
p.s. so it would appear that oi ltemps do get warm enough for coolers if pushed hard enough...

just my thoughts..bernie.

Very interesting. You used an S13 pump and S13 diff cooler. It looks like the pump you have got off an S13 is the same as the 300ZX /R32 Hitachi pump for the rear axel?

My wife has a 1993 S13 and the pump is different. The rad' on hers is exactly the same.

On my R34 I wired the 2 pumps via the alternator using a split charge relay that is usually used for towing a caravan! This way, if the iginition is off, so is the pumps. I did not bother with a 3rd cooler and pump for the rear diff' but then again, it may be good idea for a track car?

I used 80' thermostat switches, is 100' not too high?

I am please to be of help.

Nik
