Vibration

Guy's i need some help!!!!

I have a vibration on my car that you can feel when driving and when stood still in neutral it seems to be worse between 1000 and 2000 rpm, i have changed the coils to splitfires, plugs to iridiums and ign amp to see if it was a slight miss but it's still no better.

The vibration comes mainly through the steering wheel/column but you can feel it slightly through the shell of the car too.

Anyone have any other ideas what it could be or where else to start looking for faults?

scoobs

is it like this?

It idles FINE

but if you increase the revs by 2 or 3 hundred rpm, the whole car shakes?

then, as the revs rise it settles again?

Mine does that and i have asked a few times about it and got no firm response.

i assumed it was my map?

tweenie, what makes you say inlet manifold gasket?

cheers

Mookistar,

yeah it's a bit like that between 1000 and 2000 rpm is where it's at it's worst then as the revs rise it becomes less noticeable, i have changed the ECU on mine too and it was just the same so i'm not sure if it can be the map

So when you asked about it what sort of responses did you get?

people just sounded scared at the word "vibration"

lol

mine does it, but only at 1100rpm, not above or below, and i've never noticed it when driving

i firgured it was the torque of the engine causing it to rock, as i was used to a transverse four before hand.

now i'm not so sure

hopefully it'll be in a specialist this month for some other bits and i'll get them too take a look

Just a guess but may be a faulty knock sensor, although your vibration sounds quite serious. You would not normaly know your sensor was faulty untill you get the fault codes read?

Maybe worth getting it tested - although could cost a bit of cash.

I had a similar problem in another car of mine, it turns out that a couple of the engine mounts needed replacement.

As in check that all visible rotating parts are rotating without any play. perhaps the word balanced was the wrong term.

I posted my answer from experiance, as my viscouse was moving out of line by about 1cm and could be felt only at low revs, this will obviously have a negative effect on the water pump bearings, which could also be breaking down causing the movement, although this was not the reason on mine.

Ron at RK look a look at this for me last week, and he says nothing it afoot. Says he's had a few do it, so must be a characteristic of the engine or mapping.

he didn't think it was worth worrying about, having eliminated manifold gasgets

Hi,

Might sound odd but mine used to do this, slight miss before about 2,000 then smooth all the way. I changed the cambelt and found the vibration had gone, the old belt was way too slack. I had already gone down the spark route and mine has new inlet manifold gaskets already.

Just thought I would share.

Martin.

I was going to mention engine mounts but MrRoboto beat me to it

Don't suppose it's quite the same for a longitudinal engine such as in the Skyline but when the engine mounts were shot in my Cavalier (transverse engine) it was taking up all of the slack the exhaust's flex mountings and at about 1800rpm there was a very noticeable vibration throughout the whole car. One day it stopped but the exhaust got a lot louder - it had sheared one of the end plates for the central muffler. I had the mounts and exhaust section replaced and it's never done it since.

Just had a thought - does the exhaust look 'well hung' or do the mounts look stretched (ie pulled to the end of their travel) ?
