Do you HAVE to drain the gearbox oil when changing the clutch?

I`ve bought some redline heavy shockproof to try but I will also be fitting a clutch in maybe a month or 2.

Should I wait and do the clutch before filling the gearbox with £100 worth of oil? Can you change the clutch without draining the box? (or loosing much of it anyway)

Cheers...

Why would you need to drain the gearbox oil to change the clutch?

Like already said, you shouldn't really need to change the oil or lose and.

When i changed mine i only lost a little out of the gear turret because it was only two of us lifting it out and that g/box is a heavy bugger.

if you have a ramps and a transmission jack then you shouldnt lose any.

Pikey - Its a UK car with cooler pipes attached. These might need removing to move the gearbox? Other than that, just spillage out of the driveshaft / propshaft holes.

Sounds like it would be OK to refill now.

Thanks.

My gearbox fell off the jack a lot of the oil ran out of the gear stick plate hole all over the garage floor. Drain it in a clean container then put it back for what little time it takes.Dont re fill the gearbox from the gear stick hole though most of it stays in the transfer box and sprays out as you drive

lol

Have you tried having the car towed with no gearstick installed? Above about 20mph you get a little fountain effect

At 70mph with 5litres of oil in the transfer box you get the James Bond effect.
