R34 - G35 - GTR

Can we please have a sticky up explaining the evolution of the skyline from R32 to G35 and how the new Nissan GTR fits into this. It seems every thread on the new GTR degenerates into stupidity with comments like

"its not a Skyline though"

"wow have you seen the new R35"

"when are they releasing the new R35"

"the new Skyline GTR...."

"oh it's just a renault anyway"

Hopefully it might help people understand where the Skyline brand and GTR brand are going and why the cars look like they do.

Forgetting the earlier "Prince" skylines and the 40+year history of the name for a moment.........

The newbie dumbass guide to 'Da Skyline' is as follows.....

R series skylines are so called because they use the RB series of engines. This is avalaible from 2.0 litre normally aspirated, upto 2.6twin turbo or even 3.0 litre single turbo in some countries. These cars then had a number from 31-34 to designate which body generation it was. So R31 from the 80's was boxy and square looking, R32 was more rounded, R33 was very rounded like alot of 90's cars and R34 kinda went back to the R32 look somewhat, with a modern techno aggressive twist.

In 2002 the RB engines would no longer pass the strict emissions tests that countries were going to be using, and as such that series of engine was discontinued, and the VQ series was adopted. At the same time, modern car building trends meant that if a manufacturer was going to compete on a global scale then it needed to reduce all the different core components that it used to make up the cars and concentrate on developing cars that shared a basic "platform". Its something the germans have been doing for a while now, with VW leading the way with many many cars based on only 3 or 4 diferent basic chassis and layouts. This resulted in the new Skyline fundamentally being a 350z with different body panels and interior, with small changes to the cheaper less essential parts making the essence of the new car. This is what is currently being sold as a Skyline or Infiniti G35 in the US. It should more accurately be described as a V35, but the US name kind of muddies the waters somewhat.

At this point Nissan also took the decision that as the GTR was such a fundamentally different vehicle to the more basic family car it had always shared a bodystyle with (much like the RS Cosworth and its Sierra or Escort underpinnings) that it was going to sever that link entirely and make the new GTR a completely bespoke creation in its own right, no longer tied directly to the Skyline for body or styling cues. underneath it is still based on that same 350z V/G35 chassis but the engine, running gear and many other parts will be a mixture of modifed versions of those currently available alongside some new totally original bits that we have yet to be told about.

Im not saying that I necessarily agree or disagree that the above is a good thing, but as long as there is still a GTR of some description around, then I for one will be a happy bunny.

May i say the word... RUBBISH

They arnt called R's because of the RB engine at all!
Base models of later versions came with CA engines, and guess what...
R30s didnt come with ANY RB engines at all! FJ's, L's, and Z's

Oh, you seem to have forgot about the R30 too!

Find me a skyline that came with a turbo RB30 then? Nowhere
They were in Holdens in single cam turbo form, the only RB30s in Skylines as standard was single cam non-turbo

And dont forget the R30 Skyline spawned the coolest Skyline ever...

Oh, there was Turbo versions of all skylines from R30 onwards, but 32s was the first to get 4wd in some models.

Please enlighten us then o gob of the world as to why they are called "R" as I have only ever heard reference to the RB engine history as I put it.

I didnt say that the enginewas necessarily available in the skyline as a 3.0l turbo, I said that RB series engines are available this way - because they are !!

I hadnt distinguished the difference between R30 and R31, which is a complete mistake on my part, I thought the R30 was another model of car which had the "Skyline" name resurrected for racing purposes and that the R31 was the first of the Modern skylines.

My bad, but dont be such a cocky c*nt or I will gladly put you firmly in your place next time I see you in person. You forget that I am as happy to say these things in real life as on here, where as you just say you are and then act like an awkward little sheep unless you have a couple of hangers on around you.

What the fuuuc..
I say your wrong, but i dont take the ****, and your having a spaz out on me!

I dot have a clue why they called R, I was just saying its **** all to do with them having RB engines!

What you on about?

You love jmping in and giving me or anyone loads of abuse on here at any oppertunity you see, but the minute someone corrects you (without any abuse, just in a jokey way, rubbish in capital letters and a few smilies, wow) you freak out and give it loads with the big hard bladey routine?!

**** knows where the "arkward lil sheep" thing came from either as only time i was remotley quiet was when first me you, and to be honest i didnt have much to say
But feel free to give it loads if you feel better.

I thought you was a sound bloke, but clearly its all give and no take
