AFMs = air flow meters

They are the little black boxes between the airbox / air filters and the turbos. They tell the car how much air is being sucked into the engine.

If you change them for different ones (ie 300ZX ones, Nismo ones etc) it will **** up the ECU map, so no you cant just change them. Unless yours are faulty and you replace them for standard ones in which case that's fine

AFM = AirFlow Meter

yes you can just "put them in"

in fact you must have them otherwise your engine won't work

I think general advice is to keep AFM's if engine power is below 600bhp. There are upgrades over the standard AFM's to get to 600, but these are only suitable if you have a mangement system capable of adapting to them (although you would not get 600 out of the stock ECU anyway). Putting bigger AFM's on does not increase the power at all (other than a very small air flow restriction), only allows you to go for more power as they have a higher measuring capacity. If you go much above 600bhp then your almost forced to change to a MAP (manifold air pressure) based measuring system, unless your going to dick around with 3 or more AFM's.
I am not very familiar with the Nissan AFM options, so only use the above numbers as a rough guide. I'm sure there are previous posts that tell you exactly what each type of AFM is rated at, if your interested.

Send a message via ICQ to Peter
I think the Nismo afms are rated to cope with around 680bhp or the volume of airflow to produce that sort of power anyway...
