Anybody heard of HKS evc IV

Anybody know if this is worth buying?? I copied the write up to see what you's think.

HKS - EVC IV

Product Details
Brand HKS

Category Electronics

The EVC IV is a user-friendly, full-featured digital electronic boost controller that utilizes a precision "closed-loop" boost regulating stepping motor. Stepping motors are used because they can handle higher boost levels and are quicker to react to various conditions, thus offering quicker boost response and higher stable boost levels throughout each gear.

The HKS EVC IV can correct the signal to the wastegate several times each second, thus allowing a more rapid boost rise without overboosting. A built-in "Fuzzy Logic" program will learn the base boost curve and optimizes it for maximum response and stable boost. For instances where "Fuzzy Logic" is not applicable, it can be bypassed during initial setup.

Via an illuminated knob on the headunit, the EVC IV is adjustable up to 2.5bar (36.25psi) of boost pressure and incorporates a real time digital boost and vacuum display for precise boost calibration and monitoring. 1-Touch "High" and "Low" boost level presets allow for multiple settings to accommodate for varying power needs. For extra boost, the scramble boost feature will add a users specified amount of boost over the current boost setting for a preset duration between 1-30 seconds.

An optional remote scramble boost trigger is available to supplement the trigger button on the headunit for Scramble Boost activation. A built-in visual and audible overboost warning feature will revert boost levels to baseline if boost levels exceed the warning level entered by the user. To prevent losing all valuable data and presets, each EVC has flash memory to retain all settings and presets if power is ever removed from the unit.

EVC IV features
1. Adjustable up to 2,5 Bar (36.25psi)
2. Real time Digital Boost and Vacum display
3. Liquid Crystal Display Screen
4. High and Low Boost present levels
5. Scramble Boost feature
6. External Scramble Boost Trigger available
7. Visual and Audible overboost warning feature
8. Internal and External wastegate applicable
9. Precision "closed-loop" boost regulating stepping motor
10.Fuzzy Logic Programming will learn natural boost curve and optimize it.
11.Flash Memory

Sorry for late reply. Yes!
I have had mine on for a few years now. Controls boost nicely. I fiddled with it earlier in the year and it started overboosting but let one of the lads at RBM set it up again and the car has been spot on ever since. Ordered a splash button for it as well.
Now I run 0.8 bar lo boost, 1.2 bar hi boost and 1.4 bar splash.

Had one on my old car.
As a boost controller it does the job very well, but does not seem to be as adjustable as some others.

Thanks dave.
Forgot to say, it is great but old technology now. Newer boost controllers will have more features of course!

Hi Dave.
I didn't realise we were talking about the one that you have....I thought the stepper motor version was only available on the EVC with the seperate screen. (I never understood why the Japanese and Euro HKS don't have the same number )
They are both very good anyway - it just seems that a couple of other controllers allow a bit more functionality.

Doesn´t the EVC IV and V have the same stepping motor?
The EVC V has more options like self learn mode, automatic pressure adjustment when driving in mountain areas etc...
I liked my IV very much, always kept a stable boost. I recommend the EVC IV.

Look on Skylines Aus as they have instructions. It is a bit fiddly but u have to get it into learning mode and blast through third gear until u here a bleep and then it will flash H and u do the same again until it bleeps.
Once this is done u have your stock boost registered and can dial in what u need.
A bit of advice...once set up lock the unit in inhibit mode so u dont turn the knob accidently and blow your engine by overboosting, which is easily done.

The stepping motors fail and then you start either overboosting or running only actuator boost depending on what position the valve was at when the motor failed lol
Having taken one apart it seems to work by turning a needle/valve inside and this alters the amount of air that is bled off. Mine must have stuck partially open as it would boost to 1.3 instead of 1.05, boost came on a lot quicker though
Changing the settings would make no difference, but when I bypassed the motor unit I was getting a solid 0.99 bar

Happened to me at a trackday at castle combe, would have killed my engine had I not set the overboost warning

The guys at the garage put it in, said they had left it for me to set up. Thing is, after switch on, the little number in the top right hand corner reads 137...

And if I boot it, the big number whacks round way up into the hundreds. Now i'm no rocket scientist but isn't that little number peak boost and the big current boost? If so then that means i'm boosting upto nearly 1.4BAR which would be enough to probably make the standard turbos bite the big one.... Please correct me if i'm wrong. i hope I am. Could I assume that if it's not set up properly at the moment it would be giving false boost readings thus saying it's boosting at 137 but in reality it's not?
