Few tuning questions

1.3 bar
HKS 264/264 cams
A'PEXi super intake thingjobwhatsit air filters
Large bore (4") decat Invidia exhaust (one silencer in center section and 5" backbox)
HKS downpipes
Power FC
PFC Boost control kit
550cc Nismo injectors
HKS GT-SS turbos

That's the basic spec of my GTR32 at the mo (ignoring the supporting mods like hard pipe kit, uprated intercooler, etc. etc. as these don't affect power) - just thought I'd get that stated before asking my questions:

1) Would you class 264/264 HKS cams as "lumpy"? My idle is atrocious, with it wobbling from 850 up to 1200ish.

2) Talking about "lumpy cams", can someone please clarify the difference between "lumpy cams" and "erratic idle"? Any links to audio/video clips that help make the difference obvious would be great

3) Would you consider the above spec pretty safe to aim for 500bhp? Or is 500bhp just about the absolute limit?

Jim

What AFM's are you running?

I run 272 cams using only the ignition timing to control the idle speed and at 1000rpm they're not lumpy. Is you PFC set correctly?

What reading are you using for the 4 idle speeds?

According to the hks website, gtss turbos,264 cams, fuelling and ecu etc you should get 574bhp at 1.4bar,but how accurate their power claims are i dont know.

Well, the old girl's running like a dog at the moment so a check up is in order. AFAIK it's on standard AFMs.

on standard afms and fuelling you will struggle past 450bhp

I think the power fc has an idle control thing that you need to set up when the unit is first fired up.

Perhaps this needs doing.

Possibly. I've got a Bosch 044 in-tank fuel pump to fit and some new A'PECi filters on order so will get those sorted and then have a word with a 'chooner'

The engine & kit came from an R33 (a very nice one, eh Matty? ) which had received the Middlehurst 500bhp upgrade so I also have whatever AFMs were fitted to that in the attic as well at the mo. Maybe I should have a look at them as well...

Car looks a little different now though Jim
Pitty you weren't at Abbey yesterday, car was there on show.

AFM's on that engine were still standard ones, but had the full HKS piping kit.

Looks absolutely stunning Matt Possibly the nicest 33 I have seen.

Jim - may have a pair of Z32 AFMs off my car shortly if you are interested.

Cheers Nick, Can't wait til it's finished now.
Scott kindly took me out for a drive yesterday whilst it's still being run in.
I've got a load of pics of the build process and will post them up when it's finished.

Matt.

No probs matey

Dunno if I need Z32 AFMs for 500bhp? If Middlehurst didn't fit em as part of the conversion then maybe I just need to spend my pennies getting the PFC looked at and sort out the map/idle/det issues...?

I can hear my conscience telling me to save my money for the wedding next year, and here I am surfing for various ways to spend lots of cash on my car! I am SOOOOO gonna get a slap off the missus if she ever reads this thread

I just got married - havent been able to afford to properly drive my car since July......

Standard AFMS max out at about 450 apparently, so 500 is unlikely to be acheivable.

Thats the info I had aswell, but not sure if its another urban Skyline myth that people just follow because it was posted on the internet once. You know, like '720cc injectors wont fit in a standard fuel rail', or 'you need a hard pipe kit' or 'you need a metal head gasket to run over 1.2bar of boost' - stuff like that.
