Use aircon fan instead of viscous fan?
My 'viscous' fan has seized solid
So I was thinking, as Ive ditched all my aircon, why dont I rig up the aircon fan on a switch and take the viscous one off altogether (obviously leaving the pulley and belt on) Reckon I might try it anyway, just wanted to see whether anybody's already done it SteveN - what you doing for a fan? You wouldnt have your viscous one lying around that you're not planning to use would you? ![]() |

hi dood, yeh bin the vicous fan; i got my 33 gtr as a non runner, & one of the first things i did was to bin all the aircon sh1t, & the vicous fan
& got a big leky one from the scappers, but you could use the aircon one but poss abit small, & wired it into the aircon fan plug as this is turned on by the switch in the bottom of the rad so no other switch needed, & as never overheated in 2 summers, wen your in traffic you can here the fan turn on & off, as it do,s in many others cars, so bin the big daft thing. if you need more imfo let mo kno, cheers. I dont want to have to use my aircon button, as it messes up my idle for some reason, even though both values are set the same on the PowerFC!
I dont want it to be a totally manual system either, as I'm bound to forget to turn it on and overheat the engine or something. Need a thermostatic switch I guess. Maplin to the rescue ![]() |

hi again you dont have to use the aircon button, AT ALL, on the 33 so poss on the 32 there is a stated fan switch in the bottom of the rad & this go,s to the aircon fan, so when she gets hot it helps the viscous joby, so if you wire it to this you should have no prob as it will turn on & off for you on its own, cheers. The aircon fan is too small I reckon.
Conventional wisdom is that electric fans shift too little air and the viscous fan is the way to go. Do a search and that is the general opinion. However there are big, powerful engines that get by with electric fans so I don't see why it can't be done. Just get one that moves a lot of air!!! Billion do a fan controller with a manual override so see what type of electric fan they use it to control, this should give you a guide at least. |

I wouldnt put a fan on the front mount - maybe useful when stationary, but once your upto speed it will be a hinderance more than anything else.
I read a thread a while back where a few people had used aftermarket electric fans - Im not sure about the air con fan - as this is pretty small. If electric fans werent capable, then why would most car manufacturers use them? |
