Well done RonK.
Anyone got a few action shots of the guys competing with the spectators/crowds in the background as I want to get a real feel for the event. Glen

venue info
hi Glen
the crowds werent massive by totb 4 uk standards, but its the first time they have ever run anything like this over there. we also had around 60 competitors sign on in total, which is great, we only had around 70 for the first ever totb uk. They had to turn people away on the day who wished to sign on as no late entries were allowed. i'd have thought there were similar crowd numbers to our first totb uk event by the look of it. the cultural differences were also obvious, many of the competitors/spectators arrived later on in the day to start running, but were mad keen to get runs in on all 3 events. at the 10am start time for the handling we'd only got around 45 competitors of the list arrived, many came down as we started the handling. we also had to stop at 12.30pm for a prayer period, and restart after lunch, the drag and top speed being run late afternoon and then under floodlights! (excellent venue btw, although new it blows away anything in the uk for this type of event.) They are building a proper 3km tarmac cct for us to run timed "attack" type laps next time, plus extending the main drag strip to include a 2 mile straight. Top speed distance was reduced down to just 700m with around the same for braking, the strip itself was a proper FIA strip which is glued if reqd. one of the probs that they get is that sand blows down the track and sticks to the glue! The strip and handling areas had purpose made seating, and the control tower was air conditioned. the pit garages (30) are all new and built for this event, and will be air con for the future, altho they were a lot cooler than outside (25-28c most days we were there). the Sheik had obviously invested a hell of a lot of money in the venue. the entire paddock was block paved and floodlit, with floodlights all round the venue etc. one of the many good things to come out of it was the Sheik and his management were apparently blown away by the response to the event over there, and want to run qualifying events monthly if they can in preparation for what should become a great annual event over there. Gear One TV from the area filmed the event and have said they were impressed with how well received it was and how many cars competed, they'd seen nothing like it. If anyone wanted to take a car over to copmpete themselves in future they'd be given a very warm reception as we were, its also only an hour from Dubai which was superb. food and drink were readily available, and cheap, the sheik also allowed us to have alcoholic drinks at the after-party outdoors, which was a very nice gesture after a long hot day, as normally its drinks only inside their hotels and restaurants! ![]()

winning time was 10.08s, on the 1/4m. Tim was confident he'd have run a 9s there also with a few more runs in. top speeds and 1/4m strip were all in km, so alan will have the results up for them soon i hope. they'd extended the drag strip to around 1400m for us, but we ran at 700m for the top speed trap to be safe. they are building out into the desert to give a much longer top speed trap for the future, in addition to a full circuit for flying timed laps. it will also probaly become 2 days there with handling done on one day, top speed/drag the next, due to the many differences over there the people come out later to play and stay up later! some of the cars were very interesting that competed, all road driven to the event etc; GT40 (sheiks own), Ferrari, Saleen, M3, aerial atom, supercharged v8 merc saloon (very nice), 911 turbo, corvette, s13 200sx, etc. not many big power skylines, but apparently they are very difficult to register in that area due to their regs, but the skyline is deffo one of their most well know cars, hence the uk guys making such a big impression. ![]()

That's great Chris,
Sounds like the place to be. What does it cost to ship and bring back a car? Can you ask the Sheik to build some competitor accomodation too ![]() Regards Nito

Air-con came in handy as well. Big thanks to all the organisers and everyone else at the event, for the first time running it in a different country I'd say it went very well and it was nice to see the Sheikh get some of his cars out. Ford GT40, Carrera GT, Ferrari 430 and a Corvette to name a few. The GT40 looked great on track. The spectators were amazing when the UK cars went up for a run, never seen so much clapping and cheering. Adrian and Ron were amazing to watch on the handling circuit, Adrian on 3 wheels most of the way round, Ron VERY sideways at times . Congratulations to Ron for the overall win and also very well done to Adrian (who was level on points). Looks like I still need more practice on the twisties.

Purely out of interest,
How safe would it be to run 200mph plus on the extended runway with sand on the track? With you guys having been there would it be an issue at all? Regards Nito

some of the guys over there looked to have been trying it on their local roads!
its a good point tho, with the sand coming over the surface, altho they did have machines for blowing and scrubbing /prepping the track. shipping costs were around £2k per car i reckon all in. plans are in hand to look at how to take over more cars or to offer packages to interested parties wanting to compete. accomodation nearby was nice, only 10 mins from venue, and about 45mins to an hour by car from dubai. (altho local taxi drivers took longer and got lost on the way!) one hour taxi ride for 5 people cost £16 all in! lol
