little knocking on rear suspension

I have been trying to find out on where the knock is at the back of the suspension system in my 33 GTR.. Can't see any loose part or things. I was suspecting it is the antiroll bar bushes but they are sold and don;t look too bad...

can someone suggest some areas to look at that is prone to a GTR rear suspension set up??

The coil over looks fine with no leaks (visually)

1) does anyone has a spare set of std rear shocks (with springs) that I can either rent or borrow or buy (if cheap enough) so I can eliminate the problem?

2), if its a antiroll bar bushes, can someone give me a part no for it? a 1995 V spec Import.

Thanks

Top mount knock

I am suffering the same symptoms on my BNR32 fitted with OHLINS coilovers, apparently this is a common problem that occurs after 5000km of use and is something that you either fix regularly or you simply have to put up with the knocking noise.

Personally I find the noise too irritating to live with so I may return to standard rubber top mounts, the other option I have been advised to do is rotate the top mount bearings and that will fix the problem although only temporarily.

Does anyone else have any experience of this, and can anyone suggest a supplier that sells the top mount bearings???

"Skidmore, Nicholas"

Sells spherical bearings, BUT, he supplies mainly to the race car construction industry, you MUST be able to quote the size of the bearings you need (ID, OD and width, and whether you need a PTFE lined type [you do...]). NMB and Goldline make the best ones, but they are NOT cheap!

N.Skidmore@wlv.ac.uk is the rest of his e-mail address, it stripped it on posting for some reason.

The bearing was the problem was my Ohlins (SOKI) but I can't get a replacement anywhere! My mechanic simply took it out and turned it around - knocking stopped!

Make sure it's not the bearing itsel moving in the top mount plate, if it is, Loctite it in with Loctite Bearing Fit. The bearing inner should be tight to articulte by hand, if it moves with light finger pressure it needs changing.

Chris / Skyline69

Thanks for the info, much appreciated - I will contact Mr Skidmore ASAP.

I'm going to have the shocks taken apart and inspected tomorrow, and will probably try reversing the bearings first, to see if that works; while there out I’ll also measure them.

Chris - sorry to be a dope but what do ID and OD stand for??

After turning the bearings round the situation has improved dramatically, however it can still be heard [intermittently] on really uneven surfaces.

I suspect that the noise will come back again at some point, but at least now I have all of the necessary measurements to source some new ones.

The first thing you notice when you get really decent suspension, is just how sh1t British roads really are...

If your suspension is the JDM Ohlins road and track (SOKI) could you send me the model number and bearing dimensions as I will probably need them also. If it help my mechanic says although the rattle may come back it may also be gone for good . Miguel is trying to source me an original bearing in Japan but we are having little luck at present .

Try Dave at Aurok (www.aurok.com). They are specialists for suspension systems being connected with the A1 Grand Prix, Renault Motorsport etc. I can fully recommend them as they revalved and retuned my Ohlin coilovers.

This may sound like a joke-but i'm serious! Check to see if your jack is in the car. Even if its really tight in its crtadle it still makes noise over bumps. Sounds exactly like a top mount in the back left corner. Take the jack out for a couple days and see if thats it. That was the problem on my car!
