USA V8's are understressed for a good reason - they last longer. Everyone builds cars to a differing remit, USA cars don't need to corner on B roads like our cars so they don't spend the money on cornering. Building an understressed 5.7 litre engine giving "only" 350bhp means that you don't have to service it as often, they are easy to maintain and some have a very low bhp/tonne and I believe at one stage the LS2 engine was the lowest for a production engine in the world (even better than Ferrari). Every manufacturer has different reasons for using difference engines and they use different engines in different situations depending on use etc (Ford for example).
