Smile dyno graph...do i have standard turbos?!

Hi every one,

i recently had my car (R32 GTR 1991) dynoed at 0.9 bar (low boost-324bhp @ 8750rpm) as i didnt want to risk blowing the turbos running over 1 bar (i have gathered from reading on this forum that 1 bar is the max boost stock turbos can take before they let go, due to the ceramic internals).

i have done a search and from what i gather the standard turbo's fitted to a R32 GTR are garrets.
the codes i got off the front of the turbo's were garret M24 1-2 (i had to take a lot of pipework off just to see the turbos! they look very clean). are these the standard turbo's?

its just that the dyno graph is heading skywards at 8700rpm, where as the majority of dyno graphs i have seen, seem to tail or even drop off towards the red line!? (reading taken from dyno, not speedo) and i thought the factory rev limiter was set at 8200rpm!

its got a greddy boost controller, boost gauge & turbo timer fitted.
also has hks twin cone induction, exhaust system (3.5' ish) with decat pipe.

so are these standard turbo's, could they have steel internals or do i have something special (or am i just dreaming!)

also, any ideas what bhp it would push running at 1 bar? can i push them any further?

any help / comments will be much appreciated!

thank you

You're braver than me, taking her to 8750 rpm... The graphs do suggest that you have something other than a stock setup though.

Thats what I was thinking as well,, at this point am no longer concerned about the turbo boosting at 0.9 or 1.0bar more like worried about the engine giving up.

would it be better just to look under the car to know what turbos you are running.

pic of engine bay. pretty standard, apart from hks induction and greddy boost controller. (doesnt even have a hard pipe kit!)

i did not think it would rev past 8200rpm. i think the technician was counting on it hitting the rev limiter sooner as well! (in fact, i'm not even sure if it even hit the rev limiter! )

ive had a look underneath as well, can just about make out the turbo's! still look very clean!
is there any definate way of knowing for sure what they are or do they have to come out? . do the numbers i mentioned mean anything? is the skyline fitted with garrets as standard?
(boost gauge starts to register boost at just over 2000rpm, by 3500rpm it just surges forward, its not gradual, its like all the power comes in at once).

I havnt been out in any other skylines so don't know if this is normal.
my mates supra tt has a much more gradual power delivery but i think thats because of its sequential turbo set up where the first turbo spools at 2000rpm and the second at 4000rpm.

Monster,

i will send you a link with some details about turbos, but from the info you supplied there is no chance of telling what your turbos are. You either need to get to the centre cartridge or the A/R size which will be just after the M 24 number you did see.

It is possible to see without removing the intake system you just need a good torch and a mirror on a flexible shaft, whole heap of fiddling but it can be done. And yes Garret are the standard turbo supplier for the GTR R32

Dastek

Looked at my graph at 0.9 bar from Dastek as while back.Yours seems to spool around the same revs as mine with standard turbos. You seem to be pretty low on power unless that figure is at the wheels and mine is at the fly.Anyway spool up is similar, however your tourque seems to start dropping around 6k where mine goes to 6.5k. I had them rev mine to 8k maximum so mine stops there, so cant compare in the 8.5k range.....Your a brave man, i thought i was brave going to 8k--wouldnt consider 8.5k revs.....

thanks for all the info guys.

i think i've got standard turbo's! looks identical to the standard one on the link tacker provided. not to worry, still feels very fast , and it'll be an excuse to upgrade

i thought the rev limiter would have cut in well before 8750rpm! i don't think ive taken it past 7500rpm on the road.

another quick question if i may...

is the standard intercooler a trust item? as mine has trust engraved on it.

thanks for all your help.

Trust is aftermarket mate

Also you must have a chipped engine management ECU - stock rev limiter is 8000rpm from memory and your goin way past that.

On a side not R32 GTR tachometers are notorious for reading high so you might want to have yours checked.
