What colour gunge ? and do you do lots of short trips ?

First job I think is flush out and see if it returns.... Do the rubber coolant pipes get very hard to squeeze ?

Losing oil or water ? oil colour ok ?

Sometimes very short trips that dont allow the car to warm up can cuase this, but its normally on the oil filler cap not in the rad, Sounds like its pushing oil into the cooling system......

R32_Combat is most likely right......
