Fantastic R33 Gearbox replacement £££

Hi guys,

I am looking at my first GTR but with high mileage - am I wrong to worry that it might need a gearbox at some point? The engine is new so no worries there... What does a gearbox overhaul / new one cost??? Just thinking worst case scenario as I can't spend much (After buying it) for six months as she wants a house anytime soon so money is tight till feb... The car has done 80k but was pulling 720Bhp for a while...

Am I being overcautious?

Send a message via MSN to Fuggles
I've done over 100,000 miles on a standard box and am running reasonable power.
Okay so it wont go into fourth right now and it crunches in third, but maybe that's too much dragging

You have a credit card don't you!

A skyline will drain your wallet quicker then Paris Hilton - and thats just the fuel!

What do you consider high mileage? Mine has 83k on the clock and my gearbox is spot on.

LOL!!!

Yeah, I have a credit card - I know the expected costs - including maintenance... Just making sure that the gearbox is good for a long haul I guess... You have one but you must remeber the trepidation of trying to buy your 1st real supercar - you don't want to get it wrong and ruin the dream... £££'s I can handle, having it in a shop for a gearbox or something else because I didn't do my home work properly would upset me...

They last for ages unless you use wide sticky tyres that hardly spin during a 6K launch and a triple plate clutch.

Reading between the lines there are two questions. 1 does the standard gearbox go wrong at 40k miles?.I would say the drive train of a GTR is good for 80k plus unless you shear a gear through too much power. And the cost of a rebuild.

You worry too much, not a good thing with a performance car, yes a lot can go wrong but not really if you follow strict maintenance and use it properly.

Buy it and do not do any stupid full power launches and you should be alright.

The usual high mileage problems are stiff changes 1-2 when cold and 4-5 crunch but you can live with that. You are more liable to spend money on clutchs than a new box.

Second hand gearbox's (standard) come on the market very often for about £300+

Buy the car and get it serviced properly by a specialist to see what mods have been done if it really has been running big power, get the cam belt changed if not done and get the oils changed, and i meen all the oil - gearbox, diffs etc.

Unless you are really unlucky you will be ok these are really strong cars but i would suggest as a first car one that has not had 700+ HP as you do not tune an engine to that power and not drag it, it may have been abused, but talk is cheap - was it really 700+? try a standard one first they are fast enought and nearly unburstable. It takes a lot of money to get 700HP whats been done? are the mods still there or has the car been returned to standard?

my advise and only mine, is if you want reliability buy a stage one or standard car there are a lot around at very reasonable costs, buy one off this forum with a good known history.

Sorry to dredge up an old(ish) thread, for my recent experience may help for info.

I blew up 5th gear last night, mine has done about 160k miles @ Stage 1 ~ 420bhp. Unfortunately it took out reverse too :/
