Rebuild ??

What constitutes a rebuild on a turbo ??

I have a pair of R34 turbos gathering dust, waiting to be installed.
I bought them off a chap who said they have no shaft play etc, which seemed true as when I got them I tried moving the shaft and there was no play. Is this the correct way of determining shaft play, as I was cleaning them up the other day to find that they both have about 1-2mm movement.

Your thoughts please

Should roller bearing turbos have any play at all???

I shouldn't think so.

I've been told that because they've been sat for a while the oil that's in the bearings may have drained ? I'm not sure as I dont know the signs of failure.
could this be true ?
