USA V8's are understressed for a good reason - they last longer. Everyone builds cars to a differing remit, USA cars don't need to corner on B roads like our cars so they don't spend the money on cornering. Building an understressed 5.7 litre engine giving "only" 350bhp means that you don't have to service it as often, they are easy to maintain and some have a very low bhp/tonne and I believe at one stage the LS2 engine was the lowest for a production engine in the world (even better than Ferrari). Every manufacturer has different reasons for using difference engines and they use different engines in different situations depending on use etc (Ford for example).

Whilst I have nothing particularly against american muscle cars I would love to herd the chassis engineers together and then give them an Ariel Atom, Lotus Exige, TVR Sagaris and maybe a 205 1.9gti
We had one engineer over and he really couldn't grasp the concept that a pug 205 could hit 60 in less than 8 seconds from anything less than a 5.7 pushrod engine...

If you havn't got one get yourself a skyline that is supposed to be capable of running low 10's/9's and see if you can do it, I would bet you can't. There is nothing wrong with American muscle cars at all, they are not "crap". A very good friend of mine drives his 95 Camaro around 12000 miles per year, it never has never had a mechanical failure and, the last time at the strip it ran 3 9's back to back and a high 8, after which, he drove it 60 miles home in air conditioned and leather comfort, how crap is that? |

The thing I really love about these cars is the sound....
They are defined by culture though ,so the cars are built for straight line speeds, I prefer something more nimble myself. Which you will find in many small British and Japanese cars (Lotus MGF and MX5 and Integra spring to mind) |

If the Americans had corners they would have cars that could corners.
It's getting interesting now as they are now selling more performance cars overseas and are now beginning to make performance cars to a more European remit (cars that can corner with interiors not made from old Tesco bags). I think in the next couple of years the USA cars will start to make a bigger appearance on these shores once they figure out what we want. And yes they do like to make 10 seconds cars that you drive to work every day (as long as the road is straight lol) .

That car was not even close to be dialed in. That is the funny part.
As for building them for the European market, I would not hold my breath. Most of the guys back in the states could really care less if the car has a streering wheel, if you know what I mean. Like skyline69 mentioned, its just a different market. Jakester, well said mate. A lot of people think the States still build their cars like back int eh 70's, which were crap. Its a whole different ball game today. If their cars were still crap, you would not have Mustangs and Camaros in the 6s. I am sure all of these are crap too. http://videos.streetfire.net/video/b...2c015a2ec0.htm Check out the Blue Mustang, that is dialed in. You cannot just build an engine with X amount of power, and not tune the suspension and expect the car to perform properly. Last edited by SkylineUSA; 3rd September 2006 at 11:56 AM.. |

The american car market facinates me because it appears to tell the consumer what they want to buy, rather than reacts to what the customer wants. The big three seem to be completely stumped by the tuner phenomenom.
