Be very careful on the advice you give this fella Jim - employment law is a bloody minefield.
There is also time worked and fulltime/part time status to consider in this, employment contracts etc but [as an employer] I can tell you the law is firmly weighted in the employees favour.
Has your friend had any written warnings on his conduct at work?
Does he have a contract?
Is he full time?
Can he afford a solicitor?
