Engine oil and octane booster

Hi everyone, anyone know the best place to buy engine oil cheap. I have so far used mobil 1 15w 50 i think and think it might be best to buy bulk.
Also I don't always have optimax fuel since there is no shell in my area so I need octane booster. I have used some nasty one from halfords but would like to know if it's again cheaper to buy in bulk. Thanks.

I use Texaco Havoline Synthetic 5W40, which is about 30 quid for 5 litres. You get it from texaco garages.

It's what middlehurst use for skylines, so must be ok.

Octane booster

Wagas,

Japvillage in Horsham sell an octane booster they recommend very highly, can't recall what it is called and haven't tried it yet but shall be giving it a blast soon. I think they chatge £10 for half a litre, and you supposedly only add a capful to each tank of fuel.
You can reach them on 01403257257.

They run it in a lot of different rice rockets, including an 800BHP (i believe) rx-7.

Cheers for the replys. Will contact Tim from Jap Village. I had used that octane booster before on my last skyline but forgot he sold it. Thanks.

Octane booster

Just been down to japvillage and bought some, seems to be running well on it. Worth a go at ten quid a litre considering how little you need to add!

I believe they call such a booster, that you use in tiny quantities, "Placebo"

There is no magic formula especially not in that small a measure.

I'm not saying that is Jap Village's issue.

So which one is it they recommend?
Silkoline Proboost?
Aldon?
Nitro Power?
NF? (Nitros Formula)

octane booster

AlexH,

Heh heh! Had a feeling placebo might be the word.
The can is in the boot just now and I ain't going out to check, but believe it to be silkoline proboost.
Well, for a tenner it was worth a shot.

Waste of money?

The proboost is ok, one of the better ones, but still not as good as a 10% mix of Touene

I tried proboost, but I used to have to use 1/2 the can to one tank....that's what was recommended.

Is your car decatted? If you haven't this will limit what additives you can use.

As polarb said, there is a massive thread all about it. Its gets a bit off track at times but there is some useful info in there.

Waqas,

NF will deliver if you order a box at a time. I don't have their number to hand but it should be on their website (which I don't have to hand either )

Octane

Cheers Alex,

Car has not yet been decatted, hopefully have it done in the next few months. Any recommendations on where to go/who to call?
Searched the forums and found a HUGE thread on boosters, very interesting reading (especially mycroft's work), had the old brain working overtime to follow it.

Car seems to have developed a dislike to something now I have added the proboost, it has twice stalled entirely and then refuses to run for about five minutes, think it could be flooding itself but not sure. After five minutes of cranking and stalling it runs perfectly again. Anyone had a similar experience or got any suggestions?

Maybe my plugs are on the way out.

Haplo,

Not sure why its failing to run....get through that tank and try again without the proboost, I assume its the only thing you've changed recently???

Proboost can occasionally produce a precipitate, especially if it is added cold to very cold fuel in the tank.

Precipitates are a common occurrance with this 'micro-bottle' stuff.

Usually no worse than a blocked filter as a result.

Minor technicality

Alex and mycroft....

Cheers guys, haven't changed anything else in the past few weeks (all the belts were done the week before but its unlikely to be them) so shall heed your advice and see what happens.

If its a result of precipitation (aren't these things designed to run in the rain?) then am I going to need a new fuel filter? Which begs my next question... where is the damn thing? For the sake of £12 I may as well change it anyway.

Once again, cheers.

Stewart

PS Ron very kindly hosted these pics for me, more soon hopefully...

Precipitation is indeed Rain to a Meterologist.

To a Chemist it means any substance that may form (in a similar manner to the coagulation of your blood) a knot of similar molecules that bind.

Precipitate in this context means that some of the metals suspended in the Fuel and the Additive have reacted in a similar manner, forming soft 'grains' within the liquid, they are usually too small for the naked eye to perceive (but not always) and they block the filter very effectively indeed.

Just as the tiny holes are invisible to your eye so are many of the precipitates I have mentioned here and in the OB thread.
