Winter project underway....

Well, as winter approaches it's time to get cracking on some new ideas for 2008....

Problem is, I've recently moved house, so before I can even think about starting on the car.......the garage needs the treatment!
Unfortunately the perfect house came with a less than perfect 'single' garage.
Ah well.....

So I started it this weekend.....
A rather drab example i'm sure you'll agree.....

All is not lost

Painting done, up with the workbench....Frame first

Sorry fire-doors, but you were destined to make the perfect workbench..

In with the removable central leg...

Now, does the car fit....

Yep.

So what's coming over the next few weeks?
1. Lighting
2. Electrics
3. Heating
4. Floor painted
5. New shelving

Then onto the car....
Plan is to pull out the engine and conduct the following:
1. New clutch
2. Modified intake pipe
3. Tweeked elbows
4. All new gaskets
5. Cam belt
6. Cam cover deflectors
7. Sump baffle
8. New cam cover colour
9. Some carbon
10. Fuel mods
11. Vacuum piping
12. Others to be added as we go....

All work bar the welding will be done by myself
Hopefully this will serve as some motivation for others to get out there and have a go!

I'm sure i'll hit a few snags, but hey, that's motoring!

Thanks for looking,
Ian

Good stuff, every Skyline needs a nice cosy garage to sleep in!

I've sorted my shelving out and like you I'll be doing the electrics etc.

The only thing though is I've that much crap in it now it's a struggle making it all fit.

It looks alot better. I dont know how in the world Europeans deal with the tiny arse garages, there like closets. How do you do any work, with the door open and the back/front of the car hanging out? What if you cant move the car, sounds like leaving the door open isnt an option with the rampant crime...only place with smaller garages is Japan, and that's usually only in the big city...my house in Japan had a two and a half car...

Sorry, just hate the tiny garages...makes it hard to get out of my car without taking 15 minutes getting it in the perfect spot without bumping anything...

cheers!
Most people in the UK prefer to fill their garages with oversized chest-freezers, just incase we stumble into another war.
As a result, the market for large garages is relatively small.....

...that and the fact that the only land left to build on in this country is either below sea-level or on flood planes.....not too dissimilar to Japan.

As you'll see throughout this project, the car will be shipped off elsewhere while the engine is in pieces in the garage!

Ian

Ha ha! I have a 10m x 7m workshop with 2 enormous doors and 12m of workbench around the walls - I can hardly move in the thing it's so full of sh*t! - well, cars and car parts actually! I used to build rally cars out of a single car garage - being confined to a small space makes you utilise it much more efficiently!!

Now I just have to keep putting up shelving to hold all the cr*p I keep accumulating!

I stuck soft off cuts of my living room carpet on the walls of my garage to stop any dents or scratches when opening the doors.

Also put the car in far as it will go and hang a ball so it just touches the screen of the car... so now I drive in until I touch the ball and I know Im as far as I can go

I plan to put something on the wall, despite never having banged the door yet!

Just looking forward to getting the engine out and getting my jobs done, ready for an outing to nurburgring early next year!

So, then, I managed to steal a couple of hours in the garage today, so thought i'd give a first update......
I've been collecting parts over the last few weeks....

HKS elbows were the first parts to get a coat of looking at...
Here's one compared to the R34 elbow.

I must say, the external quality of the HKS parts was very good, but i looked inside where the actuator pipe meets the main pipe and saw room for improvement
The pipe didn't line up with the hole perfectly and as a result, there was a huge lip on one side which will generate turbulent flow, so out came the drill and drill files...
Before:

After:

Now, next up, i'm going to make a divide to fit inside the Twin turbo pipe...
Before:

Now:

Just need to get some ali sheet to make up the divider and weld it back together! The divider will probably be made of two pieces welded together to try and ensure the gases from each turbo follow a nice smooth path! Naturally i'll de-flash the pipe while it's in pieces!

The list of jobs is growing all the time, but i'm trying to get ahead on the pre-work before i pull the engine out!

Watch this space...
Ian

Another quick update!
Engine now out of the car, ready to spend some time over the coming weeks fettling and fabricating!
Plan tomorrow to strip everything off the block, then mount the engine on the engine stand and take off the sump ready to make a baffle....

My new engine trolley is great for moving the engine around the place!

Top marks mate!!!
Will be moving to a new pad in the spring with a double garage so will be fitting a similar workbench along the back. Looking good with the engine hoist and trolley. Will be acquiring myself a hoist and stand after I move so I can extract the engine for some TLC.

Will also be following your exploits with interest. Always good to see fellow owners get stuck in themselves

TT

Good effort of the divided twin turbo pipe - bet a few people on here would buy them if you started selling them
