Angry JVC KD-G632 + CIBOX Proton 4.0GB USB

Guys

Just had my music installed in the roadster.

Unfortunately, though the sound is absolutely superb, My headunit does not seem to like reading the entire directory of my usb drive.
I looked through the manual, which being male was difficult, but at no point does it mention the unit having trouble with any size of hard drive.
Hell, the thing can read ipods so should have no problem with a measly 4gig!

Anyways, anyone out there having trouble with any kind of usb on their head unit [does not have to be JVC].
Should I reformat the usb? At the moment it is MS FAT32 or whatever.
Why is it reading some, but not all of the directory structure and why, does it always seem to start with The Greatest Hits of the Sylistics. Brilliant album as I'm sure you will all agree, but that is Folder 37, surely it should start at Folder 1?

Bit strange really ...

It might be worth formatting the drive as FAT16

Wiped the disc, reformatted as MS-DOS [I use a Mac and thats the option it gives for windows].
Copied a couple of gig across and still its crap.
I think its the unit as if I go over a bump now, its jumping and scratching like a breakdancer on acid.
Trying to borrow another USB stick, see if I can copy Maxwell across and take it from there.
I aint happy ...

I think a lot of USB head units have compatibility issues, from what I remember its more a case of "theres a list of devices that work and anything not on it won't work properly"

Got a new 4Gb usb drive and it works.
Blimmin' temperamental head unit ...

What I do notice though is though the folders appear alphabetically on the Mac, when you put the drive in the unit it plays in the order you copied them onto the disc.

I've noticed that it has trouble reading deep into directory structures. So I wrote a little C# application to flatten the directories, and it can read everything now.

But then there's another issue: it seems to have a rather small buffer, and the 40GB+ of music can't be all cached at once, which leads to alot of scanning (which I'm sure you know takes a while).

It's because it has Proton in the title.
