That car was imported through Canada and then sold to somebody in the USA. That car is perfectly legal to import into Canada from Japan, no questions asked, and would likely cost less than HALF of what that one is going for.
I'm probably going to go that route when I'm done with my GTR at the end of the summer. Sell it to someone in the US for 25K and make back the money I have put into it. |

I guess that's not a bad deal, assuming they would provide a decent rate of financing.
I'm about to enter the market for a R33, but would love to have a R32 that's already in the states so I don't have to go through all of the hassle of shipping and regulations. It might be worth it for me to buy an already imported car.... edit: or trade my Speed6 to the dealership and toss a little money their way ![]()

$30,000.....Or, join the military for 6 years and come over to England or Japan, buy a 20 year old GT-R and have them ship it back for free!! Also, we get free shipping on parts to an APO address from Japan.

That doesnt work in the US for a skyline. It has to be a car that meets NHTSA regulations in order to bring it back. Also, bringing that car in from canada is also illegal. In order to import a car from Canada it has to be a car originally manufactured in canada, since the skyline was imported its technically illegal and a circumvention of import regulations. Disassembly of the car only to put it back together as a kit car is also illegal. Its clearly stated that kit cars can only be cars not oringally having a manufacturer. Since the skyline was manufactured by Nissan.. they cant be made kit cars. It also states that trying to do so in order to circumvent EPA and importations laws is a federal offense. I live near the Canadian boarder and know of a guy here in the US with an R32. He has family in Montreal or something and the car is registered/insured etc in Canada under their name with Canadian plates, yet he really "owns" it and drives it every day in the US. Oddly enough, this is legal. So is driving a 1970 brick of steel with no air bags, drum breaks and the daily emissions of a chineese coal factory. But you cant drive a skyline for EPA and NHTSA safety reasons.... US laws suck Last edited by orbital24; 21st March 2008 at 06:25 AM. |

Unfortunately, US laws do suck in this matter, but it does not change the fact that military CAN bring a Skyline back to the states tax FREE as long as it's done it's time! |

Question.... The car company Noble got around this kit car regulation somehow because I believe Noble cars are manufactured in the UK... is that correct? I have seen there site 1gracing.com and all they did was ship the rolling classis minus the motor and then u have a motor put in yourself....and bam its a kit car.... so why not the skyline under the same crazy way....

also I am station in england right now and the only skyline that my military base guys say can be shippied for free is the 95-96 R33 and they have one RI in there records can do it ...cant remember the name but they are based out of Maryland. I called them and they want 25k to do the job.... I believe there contact info is on the NHTSA website.... kinda a high price since the car can be had for less than that...

Just to add to this. In order for us military to bring a car such as the skyine back it has to meet EPA and DOT regulations and be on the DOT's list of cars that can be legally imported. If it does not then there is also another option you can take. If the car is older than 20 years for EPA and 25 years for DOT then it is considered a classic and does not have to meet the standards. Now I can't remember off the top of my head which one is 20 and which one is 25 but either or. I have also heard that they are going to bring both of them down to 20 years. Not sure if this has happened yet or not though. So, yes, you can bring skylines back to the states LEGALLY. They just have to meet the criteria. |
