are the problems related to the earlier, renault engines, or the 'better' nissan versions?

Well it's between the X-Trail and the Toyota Rav4 (5 door).

The 2.2 X-Trail gives the same mpg as the 2.0 D-4D Rav4, and there's very little in it in terms of price when you're looking at 3-4 year old sub 40,000 mile examples.

From what I've heard/read Nissan introduced the 2.2DCi engine to replace the harsher, underpowered earlier unit after negative customer feedback/grumbles.

I keep reading though that the X-Trail tops the leaderboards for reliability across the 4x4 soft-roader tables??

X-Trail 2.2 DCI on an 05 plate will need a turbo, an intercooler and a suction control valve if they have not already been done. There were several recalls on this model as well so make sure they have been done.

I would try and get a later model as the turbo is water cooled and is not prone to the same failure, around a late 06 plate or a 57.

Good cars but like anything these days has its few little problems. Petrol ones drink like a fish and head gasket and cats are very prone to failure with an expensive repair bill to fix.

if your buying a nissan make sure is jap and none of the french stuff, all jap nissans as you know chassis numbers start with jn1 sunderland built vehicles start with sjn ones that come from spain and steer clear of star with vsk like eg, d40 navara ncap only gave this 1 star but they are having the airbag recall because of a time delay with the airbag, the old d22 navara built in jap jn1 was much better and is being re released under a different name the mp200 something or other.
