Am considering one of these as a sensible daily driver (having almost managed to persuade myself that a Z3 M 3.2 Roadster or a Honda S2000 was a 'sensible daily driver' - albeit lacking the necessary 4 seats
).Definitely looking at the diesel X-Trail. Have done my research and know that there was a facelift model in 03/04 where as well as changing the dash, Nissan also fitted a more refined, more powerful diesel engine. So I know to look for the facelift model (apparently it has cup holders at each end of the dashboard, instead of the holders in the centre console on the pre-facelift model). Just wanted to ask people's opinions (if anyone has one) of these? I took a 06 plate basic model (no frills and 2wd only) for a test drive today and was fairly impressed. Am thinking that for the same money as a 20,000 mile 2006 base model I could get a 40,000 mile 2004 top-spec one (satnav, leather, switchable 4wd, etc.). Plus the 2004 model will already be most of the way through it's depreciation curve - so if I sell it in 2 years I might only lose a couple of grand. The 2006 model (IMHO) will take a bigger hit over those two years and I reckon I'd be losing circa £4k for doing the same mileage over the same time period. I'm assuming that whacking another 30-40,000 miles on a 40,000 2.2 DCi X-Trail should be of no concern in the reliability stakes, assuming it already has (and I maintain) a full service history? Anything else I should know about? I was quite surprised that they book in at 39mpg combined (much better than the Mitsubishi alternatives) and are actually SHORTER and NARROWER than my E39 BMW 535! ![]() Plus I like the look of them with the shiny metal bits (bullbars, sideboards, bumper protectors, etc.) - hence my post on the legality of bullbars - but alas I think that I'd have to go for one of those rubbery Endura "safe" bullbar thingies instead. Hey ho.... Comments/thoughts/suggestions/stories all welcome! ![]() |

Nice motors Jim, I will be looking at getting one myself next year.
I have run an Almera 2.2 diesel for the last couple of years (approx 50,000 miles put on it taking it to 100K) with no issues other than serviceable items such as brake pads, discs etc. I know some of these engines had Turbo's fail as well as AFM's but this is something that seems common on lots of cars these days. They make a great tow car if you have a track only weapon as they have a 2000kg plus towing capacity. What about the Kia Sorrento 2.5TD, nice looking motor if you take the badges off ![]() |

Yup. Just gotta sell the TVR Cerbera first. Beloved would kill me if I bought ANOTHER car.
Could also do with selling the BMW 535. And the Mini Cooper. And the other Mini Cooper. Errmm... ...and the Mitsubishi Colt (you're kinda getting the idea why she'd kill me if I got another without getting rid of one of the existing collection first, yes? ) |

They are generally good cars.
Make sure you get the later revised DCI model, which can be recognised by the larger TMIC rather than the smaller non-dci intercooler. Also make sure that the intercooler isn't leaking, as these are prone to this (New replacement £1600!). It usually leaks on the underside on the left hand side (drivers side) towards the front of the car. If you stick your hand underneath and feel, it will be covered in oil if it is. ![]() Also as said, the turbo's are very prone to failure. They usually start to whine quite badly due to chipping blades. ![]() The fanbelts can get noisy too, but it isn't a big job to fit a set of new if that's the case. |

I looked at one recently, and after doing a bit of homework, as has already been mentioned here, I found the diesels suffered badly from turbo failure.
Albeit negative, I hope that helps Brian |

![]() 39mpg ain't bad for a 4x4. I was also teasing myself with the idea of a Renault Megane Coupe Cabriolet diesel as those babies will see 50+mpg But I need reliability, and a French car doesn't tick that box for me ![]() |

petrol ones are better, i personally rate the new qashqai which i have bought 2.0dci turbo. excellent vehicle and the same engine is used in the new 57/08 model xtrail that would be worth getting. very reliable engine. steer clear of 2.2dcis.
