1337 means "leet" which comes from "elite" in Internet gaming circles. In the olden days hackers used to speak to each other using numbers in their words to confuse government word monitoring tools.
1 = L
3 = E
7 = T
... and so on.
So, gamers started using this confusing text language to sp33k to each other to insult or praise as it was pretty amusing. An example: "OMG I just pwn'd j00 f@gg0t"
