Guys who live in Japan - Porsche Turbo

I saw a clip the other day which said that in the days before Skyline GTRs the Porsche Turbo was king of the roads in Japan. Was this really the case and are there any tuners left who specialise in Porsche Turbos??

just curious

3 years later, I'm still haunted by a Porsche from the days when I used to go out late Satruday night to hunt for races on the C1. There was a hideously quick non wide bodied yellow 964, which I could never catch in my RX-7, no matter how hard I tried. It just wouldn't slow for corners and acceleration at speed was truly immense. I never did get a close look at it, but it's the car I remember wanting to catch the most, when I came upon it... or it overtook me!

I've always put rear engined Porsches on the top of the gauntlet shelf of driver's cars, but the cost (& unavailabilityof tuning parts at less than ridiculous prices - at least in Japan) & costs of running them's put me off... Maybe someday, if I can find one attractively priced, I'll buy one... Almost bought a rather special high power 964 turbo a month or so ago, before I realised it wasn't really a prudent thought - just a romantic one.

I'd better stick (mostly) to Japanese cars in Japan for now

What a great story..... write a book!

So... porsches are more expensive in Japan... importing one wouldnt be worth it... say a 964 3.6 Turbo...

or are they like Hens Teeth,

All interesting 911's in Japan are LHD - Not so attractive for exports to UK, therefore. They're not necessarily cheap either, unless undesirable for one reason or another.

No, but I have youtube'd 964 turbo and there are many references to a game.....??

I have searched and there are definately some 911 turbos which can be imported. Just LHD which is weird. Will these be ex-gangster cars?

After the 2nd W.W. as there were no nice cars in Japan, the higher prestige cars came from Germany, Italy and America. These all being LHD caused driving on the wrong side in Japan to become a status symbol. This still stands today. You can get cheaper models in RHD but expensive cars such as Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Porsches, Rolls Royce, High end Mercedes, etc. are almost 100% LHD in Japan. LHD Japanese cars imported from the States also tend to fetch a premium in Japan.

We've supplied a few RHD Aston Martins back to the UK in the recent past and did return quite a lot of MG RV8's to UK when they were still mint, but in general, European cars rarely get imported back to Europe from Japan.

Lots of Minis and BMW's coming back, as the Minis made for the Japanese market came with aircon as standard aswell as the BMW's being a higher spec

Some recent (E46) smaller engined 3 series going to Ireland as well as the odd Audi A3 and SLK - The base models, mostly - as these can be found in RHD. Haven't seen many Mini's awaiting shipment, though

I am still hunting for a 996 GT2, last weeks list included a silver example at Keighley trade centre LOL!! prob not worth the trip

Interestingly named the widow maker, today i mapped a SL55 AMG... the outright power was not as clean as the GT2 but OMFG not a nice place to be with the traction off when u put your foot in!! I know which car i think rather deserves the title.
