Z32 good or bad.

Hi guy, what do you think of the nissan z32(89~96 300zx).
Nissan's other bad ass motor or just ass.

Owned a 1991 black manual 300ZXTT and with BPU upgrades on those, they are indeed a lot of fun. I do not think it can match the skyline on the track, but all in all, another good Nissan sports car...

good new, bad used. Had a new one in 1990. Quick but the tail can have a mind of its own, especially when you lose traction (quite easy to break the rears loose) and the HICAS turns into HAL from 2001.

if you can get a good one they are great cars more a touring car with the roof off, and people really dont know what they are. but if you get a bad one the will drain your wallet, they are more to fix than a skyline and there are hardly no garages who can fix them

My brother has owned one for some time (2+2 TT manual).

Generally nice. Engine is good with lots of low end torque.

Issues wise in what must be ten years of ownership he's replaced the tie rods once perhaps twice, exhaust (had an aftermarket Jap item which rusted), rear spoiler (nasty spongy stuff went off) and coil-packs dying. I think he's also replaced some dampers but that's more of an age thing. I have a feeling that he replaced the speakers and amp again age related.

Interior is nice and comfy and has made the trip to Le Mans a few times now.

You think ? I have worked on the Z32, And owned a Z31 as well as working on and Owning a Skyline, They are all easy enough to work on and if a garage says they cant work on it then its not a garage you want to take any car to.

The electronics are not much different than any other big Nissan, The maxima shares a very similar setup IIRC, Besides, They are quite reliable if cared for.

The main problems I found on the Z31 and Z32 where all just age related wear and tear and the odd broken bit from a cack handed mechanic, Split pipes, Broken plugs ect ect

how many garages can you go in to and say can you check my hicas is ok and they will say "yes i know exactly what that is" or go to NISSAN and say i need my det sensor replacing and they say we dont know where it is, then after looking it up in a book they say we can change it but cant say how long it will take, cause we dont know but charge you £45 per hour. just two of the problems i had with garages

I can understand it with the Hicas (though they have built in diagnostic AFAIK), But I cant imagine why the Det sensor would be a problem.

I think to use 2 problems to suggest these cars are unfixable is stretching the point a little, But I can certainly understand your frustration.

£45 per hour isnt an especially high price for a main dealer though im afraid

i had a z32 300zx from 05 summer to 07 summer. it was an awesome car; and i had got it with 36k miles and it never skipped a beat. it was a one owner (famous guy called Jim Marshall) and had no expense spared, so i had a good car to start with.

like with all old cars if you get a bad one, you're shafted, get a well looked after one, and you should be fine. 300zx.co.uk is a good place to start. if you wait a few months, you will be able to get a '99 spec model from japan!

I suppose the main thing I wanted to know was reliability, which from the replies seems relatively ok.
I agree it's more of a torque motor,an RB it's not definitely and yes the HICAS can be SCARY sometimes.
The Z I aquired came from Japan and runs well, very well actaully,I cant quite figure out why as it has the stock injectors, but not sure about the turbos, judging from the slight lag time I would say non stock.

i didnt think it was but when they wont give you how long it will take it can soon mount up. all i'm trying to get across is how many guys on here will take there GTR's to a garage just cause it has "garage" above the door, or do they find someone who knows about GTR's. zeds are great mate just make sure you get a good one you'll find all the info you need on www.300uk.co.uk
