Change 33GTR for BMW M5 ?
I have had my 33GTR stage 1 for a couple of years and am very happy with it.
However I have developed a bit of a yen for an M5 and am thinking of selling the GTR, adding a bit of cash to get a 2001 or thereabouts M5. I expect the service / running costs of the M5 to be higher even tho I don't do track days. I know its a much more modern car with lots of electronic gadgetry etc but would welcome anyones experience of owning both as to what to expect and if this is a good idea or will I be disappointed in the driving / ownership experience. Thanks |

I have thought about doing this and have not taken the plunge just yet.My reasons were that finding a 2001 model or younger at the price I wanted meant very high mileage.Vanos is another issue, some say they are fine some say they will need changing and it is a few grand to do.
If I change the Skyline then I want something that is quick, newer, more comfortable and reliable. The M5 is quick but it will still be 7 years old so things will need replacing, then there is possible Vanos issues so it could end up as much of a money pit as my skyline.. |

Buy one from a reputable trader and make sure you get a full 12 months warranty with it. Then if it has Vanos trouble you're covered. Plus after a full 12 months of 'trying it out' with your arse covered by a warranty you can decide whether you like it enough to keep it and be prepared to pay if the Vanos needs doing.
M5 is an excellent replacement for a GT-R IMHO. More practical and comfortable but it doesn't have the point-and-stare factor that the GT-R has. Remember - you currently drive a car with ceramic turbochargers (assuming they're standard). Like Vanos has it doom-and-gloom merchants, ceramic turbos have the same sort of critics. Plus if your ceramics blow then you're probably looking at £2k to sort if you don't use 2nd hand parts and DIY. Plus if you lift off the throttle at the same time you're talking £3-4k minimum repair cost. Which sort of puts the possible Vanos bill into perspective. |
