I had the new CL500 as a rental car for my trip to Geneva Motorshow,it drives perfect, youll never feel how fast your going(even at 250km/h),really a good car, appart from how expensive it is.

I think it has a "Pipe and Slippers" kind of appeal.
If I knew I would keep it for a long time I would have one, if it was to be sold on after a year I would expect to lose a fair bit of money.

i was going to buy one which as already lost the money! new cost £78000 and i would get a 4-5 year old one with 45000 likes for £14k! so the money is already gone and the old model cl's still cost 8k so i can see me losing more that 5k over 4 years which is better than my r34!
i was maybe even thinking of a clk430 as they are cheap to but not the same car as the cl. my mate works for mb so i get trade part and labour prices |

I know two people working at MB.
One [mechanic] talks highly of the CL's, the other says they are a b@stard for parts etc. If you can source parts easily and as you have done your homework regarding residuals I'd say go for it. I'll try to get some more info but won't see one of the guys until Saturday.

ok sounds good.thanks lads.
the one thing is it has such a good spec list and i am using the skyline for work and its not the best car for this.and i can see me crusing in a top of the range merc for comfort value and its still quite fast although a sl600 is the one to have as its 0-60 time is 4.5 sec on the cl600 and cl500 6.2 |

0-60 not so important for this though surely.
CL500 AMG not too far from your price range either though ![]()

A mate of mine has a CL55 AMG and it's a nice car but the depreciation is epic. Plus he's just had to have the brake discs replaced after they splintered. He wouldn't tell me how much it cost to have them fixed but he had tears in his eyes and brought sarnies in from home instead of spending £2on ones from the shop. That's a mark of being skint if ever I saw it

I had a 1997 CL600 [the last shape] a while back and it had no end of reliability problems, I owned it for about a year and a half and it cost me about 15K in parts and labour to fix the issues that it had. [That is not including fuel, insurance and standard servicing!!] Most of the problems were electrical but I also had both front shocks go [at about a grand a pop!].
It surprised me that a car that was so expensive [105 Grand new] would be so unreliable!?! For that kind of money and over engineering I would have expected it to last a lifetime.. Saying that maybe the newer ones are more reliable?? The electrics in 1997 were not as good and a lot more complicated and less robust than they are now after all.. When she was running properly though she was a beast and you literally felt like you owned the road!! You could have had a head on collision with a Bus and won in one of those things as the one I had weighed about 2.5 tons!! 6 litre V12 ~ Pillarless coupes are cool.. just bloody expensive to run unfortunately [especially if you drive them hard] ![]() Last edited by Luckham; 12th April 2008 at 06:57 PM. |

Additionally my sister has a new shape SL 55 AMG and although it is one of the nicest looking cars on the road and is blisteringly fast for a car of its size [it will wheel spin in third with the traction control off!] it has had a number of expensive issues and has been off the road quite a lot due to problems with MB sourcing the parts.
All of the work on hers was fixed under warrantee, so if you do get one make sure it comes with full warrantee.. |
