Transmission in manual mode?

Is it NORMAL that I can't make the transmission shift to FIRST at a very low speed in manual mode? It does shift to FIRST (automatically!) when I come to a complete stop, but not at a very low speed, e.g. 5-10kmph. Many thanks in advance.

no not normal as I have shifted into first on the go before. Have you tried all the transmission modes?

not normal. but you cannot shift to 2nd from 1st at very low speed though...

are you trying to shift whilst your foot is on the gas? have you run your car in yet?

tokyogtr:

i don't remember whether my foot was on the gas when i tried to shift from 2nd to 1st. but my foot is normally on the gas when i shift. i will try again tonight without my foot on the gas then.

i have about 300 km now. hope to hit 500 km ASAP.

sewid:

it is in NORMAL transmission mode. i can try the "R" mode and see if that makes a difference.

btw, my post should have read "cannot shift from 1st to 2nd at very low speed". it will just blink 1.

if you're coasting then i don't think it will change down, there is no reason to. if you're braking then it should change down. if you're on the gas it should also change down.

but i am in manual mode, not auto.

i was cruising around and then i braked for a sharp uphill left turn. i pulled the paddle and downshifted from 3rd to 2nd and then when i was about to come to a stop ready for the turn, i guess it was around 5-10 kmph, i pulled the paddle trying to go to 1st because it was an uphill slope but i can't. it just blinked 2nd. then it climbed slowly up the slope in 2nd......strange.....

Has it been back to Nissan for the gearbox recall?

I have shifted down into first while coasting but was in R mode at the time.

yeah, this sounds like a recall problem. they got the coding backwards. the correct procedure is low speed, 1st to 2nd does not work. low speed, 2nd to 1st does work. at least that's how mine works.

sorry, no. i just drove home and tried everything. i can shift from 2nd to 1st at any speed that won't blow the box. no problems. i CANNOT shift from 1st to 2nd when under 15kph though. it just blinks 1. i definitely think your software needs updating. i doubt its a gearbox recall. probably an ecu/software recall which means it's probably fixable remotely. you need to send your ecu to mine's or someone and get it fixed.

Too bad they dont have a USB cable that you can plug into your pc and then go to the website for updates, that would be cool. Oh well, maybe in the future.

I tested in both normal Manual and R Manual modes.

Both allowed me to downshift from 2 to 1, but there is some hesitation though.. maybe abt a second between flicking the paddles.

agreed, changing down is much slower than changing up. i guess the reason is the engine speed matching that it needs to do.

I finally got it figured out!

In manual mode, if you want to downshift from 2nd to 1st at low speed (below 15 kmph or so), your foot needs to be off the gas. Otherwise, it won't let you downshift to 1st. It will just blink 2. Downshifting from 2nd to 1st at higher speed (above 15kmph or so) doesn't seem to have that off-the-gas requirement.

Downshifting in other gears doesn't require your foot off the gas either!

So, I guess afterall, there is nothing wrong with my gearbox!
