R35 Gearbox Question

Hi All

My wife has recently bought a Golf GTi with DSG flappy paddle gearbox....perfect for letting me practice with before my GTR arrives next July.....

In the Golf you select Drive and the car drives as a normal auto...as soon as you touch one of the paddles the display changes to show you which gear you're in and you can go up and down the box easily and you control it "manually" as long as you're using the paddles....if you don't touch the paddles for a few minutes it sneaks back into auto mode.

One thing I have noticed is that when you come to a stop, and you're in first, you can't select neutral...the thing just stops, and as soon as it does, it reverts to automatic mode, so you then set off in auto mode....

Does the GTR work like this?.....I hope not....does it allow you to choose neutral...then first when you want to continue....and does it have a truly manual mode where....unless you do something really stupid...it will continue to give you control until you TELL it not no...

Thanks in advance

Guy

no, does not act like this. it will stay in manual until you either put it back to auto or turn the car off. it does start out in auto everytime though. and to put it in neutral you have to push the lever to neutral. you cannot do it from the paddles like you can in a ferrari.

So what happens when you come to a complete stop, pause, and then take your foot off the brake? Does the car "creep"?

yes, it will creep forward just like an auto would. you have to put it in neutral to stop it creeping OR keep your foot on the brake. personally i'd rather they made the neutral engage the ferrari way, pull both paddles when in 1st or reverse.

I presume the clutch disengages when your foot is on the break. Is that so much different from putting it in neutral?

When I drive an auto I NEVER put it in neutral. Is that wrong?

If you press hard enough, it engages hill assist too.

If you're on a break, you're gonna be in all sorts of problems! In fact, I'd recommend a strong espresso!

I found the worse time is when you're driving uphill with bad traffic. You need to use manual mode because in auto mode the gear will upshift and downshift million times other than this everything is great!
