Its a very arguable question regarding "speed" and the MX5.
When I use on the motorway, it can hold its own but you won't be overtaking any porsches. On country lanes etc, its very capable. I hae Puredrive suspension by Performance 5, and its fantastic.

im going to get a bike me thinks for my everyday driver, was going to get some diesel shed but as diesel is so damn exp its not worth it.
205gtis are quite unreliable, i know someone who has had a 1.6 gti, which kept breaking, a 1.9gti which kept breaking and an Mi16'd one that kept breaking.haha I know someone else who has a 210bhp GTi-6 306 and that is very reliable.

70mpg that crazy. that might do the trick. if i am very gental with the skyline i get 26mpg now so with a remap and boost leak sorted i am hoping for 30mpg so for me to change my car it needs to be a lot better than that.

If it helps I've had a 1.9 GTI and put a few miles on it. Build quality is poor and they do rust but the car is pretty simple so working on them is easy. If you have high mileages in mind I'd look elsewhere as they are not very refined. Likewise I never managed to get more than 30mpg from mine. However I've heard that an aftermarket ECU can improve things. Given the stoke fuelling (rubbish) it'd be a good idea. As would an MI16, I think that the 1.9 is lighter than the 2.0 litre block. The 1.9 16v are very tuneable with something like 300bhp possible from a race tuned unit apparently.
Bottom line is they are brilliant fun but need a lot of looking after especially now that they are 8 odd years older than when I had one. Another thing to consider is a Primera GTe (for longer journeys, leather and aircon etc) or an Almera (especially in Pulsar VZR form ~170bhp odd from a 1.6). If you were really keen drop an SR20VE into the Primera or stick an SR20 crank on the SR16VE in the VZR and you'll have something which is a lot of fun and will see 35mpg rather than 30! See sr20ve.co.uk |

Another vote for the MX5. Great fun and pennies to run compared to the Skyline
