MX-5 without a doubt mate - its a seriously fun car and RWD, awesome handling and its quite light with a smallish engine so not too expensive to run

If you fit a turbo you won't stop grinning Won't be too bad on the motorway if you fit a hard top

PPC has a bloke building a diesel powered caterham at the moment. Then just make your own bio-diesel!

45-65mpg depending on how they are driven 0-60 in around 9 seconds but feels quicker , hoot to drive and peanuts to run

I got a Eunos Roadster.
Its a funtastic little car.
Good on petrol and a real hoot on country lanes.
All I do is put petrol in it and do the oil change/service thingy.
I wouldn't bother turbo or supercharging it, get a 1.8i and enjoy some natural aspiration.

I'm going for a 205 GTi as my next car.

1500 quid gets you a good example with rebuilt engine and rear beam. Small, fast, and you'll see 30mpg+ I reckon.

Two or three people have suggested MX5s. Get the 1600 version if you want to save petrol.

You might equally consider a Honda CRX. I had the later 1595cc Vti Del Sol with the electric targa top, the hot version. A bit like a go-kart, but great fun, especially when you open her up.... hehehe

I haven't driven one yet but every single person I know who's owned one says they're an absolute hoot to drive. Smigzy on here has a 1.6 GTi and told me it puts just as big a smile on his face as his Skyline.

The 1.9 is an 8v engine and only produces 130bhp, but bear in mind that the car weighs less than 1 tonne. A lot of people put the MI16 engine in which is a 1.9 16v and around 160-170bhp.

If you're lucky you might find one with a GTI6 engine in it which is 2.0 16v, around 170-180bhp but with a bit more torque.

I checked out insurance and I can get insured on a fully modified (i.e. engine, brakes, roll cage) GTi for around 300 quid on a classic car policy.
