worn rear diff - symptoms
Hello,
We had the R32 GTR om track last night. I noticed is was losing a lot of power out of corners, esp a tight cambered hairpin. (power is there, engine note increases, but no grip and doesnt feel like the back is sliding out) My first thought was the diff is worn. My 2nd thought was the susp was set too hard pitching a rear wheel up. thoughts I have since |

if the rear diff was warn it would just transfer the drive to the front. i discovered this when i blew my rear diff at the track, just unbolted the tail shaft and drove it home in FWD.
could be the centre diff i'd say if anything the viscous lsd is screwed, just acting like an open diff. still drives, just given up the ghost. Last edited by beaumackenzie; 11th June 2008 at 09:00 AM. Reason: typo's |

so what should happen if a rear wheel is lifted on a tight right hand hairpin with a fairly large incline.
The transfer of rear to front works. Someone has suggested that the car was under sprung :S ( 12kgmm all round :S ) I think the rebound was too 'low' |

Sounds like your stock R32 rear plated diff is worn out (no viscous diffs in a BNR32). If the inside wheel is spinning then the diff is no longer locking.
A new set of plates would refresh it - but seeing as the stock diff is more suited to road use (not many plates ) then maybe it's time for an uprated diff. |

I have fitted R33 gtr vspec diff on my R34 gtr, and it understeer more than before and the rear tyres would not really start to slide as before, it's probably the rear differential that is worn but i don't know if on the r33 gtr vspec rear differentials there are plates that could be changed or not?

Beaumackenzie......
Unless your 32 has been converted to active rear diff (R33 and R34 V-Spec only) then it will be a plate type LSD. The front diff as standard on all GT-R's is an open diff (except Nismo Z-tune R34 which had Nismo plate type LSD). Centre diff is the ATTESSA ET-S wet multi plate clutch with electronically control and hydraulic actuation. R34 non V-spec have a torque biasing rear diff similar to the Quaife / torsen ones. |

You need to have a play in my car Adam
Quite happy to let the rear end slide as the diff makes the car feel as controllable as a go-kart (but a heavy one )

the technology has been around for yonks, it wasnt even developed by nissan.
you obviously havent seen the thread with it doing helli's in 4wd, trust me dude it aint go no stock lsd's in it. the fact it is a autech may have somthing to do with... but i wouldnt want to brag about it. anybody would think your jealous or sumthing the way your going on about it. |

just to update...
I changed the oil, and altered the susp, softer compression, more rebound (i think).... and it seemed to grip more coming out of corners than before. So whilst the diff may be worn, or on the way out, the susp wasnt helping by prob raising the inside rear wheel |

And they dont run viscious (pretty much considered rubbish) diffs either. Adam, its pretty straightforward to tighten up the factory PLATE lsd by shimming it tighter. And its a good idea to do on a 20 year old car anyway .... |
