Brake problems on Renault 5 (1 for the mechanics)
Right guys, yesterday i got in the car as normal to set off to work and when i pressed the brake pedal it went much further down than normal (almost to the floor). now as far as i can tell the brakes were still working normal, i just had to press the pedal further to get them to bite. Also, the handbrake has no feel left to it, i have to pull it right to the top to get it to hold but heres the wierd thing, when the engine is turned off the pedal is firm again and the handbrake feels normal! Anyway, last night i went out to the car, first felt what the brakes were like when the engine off, again felt normal. So turned the engine on and this time the brakes were feeling normal again (so though ok will take it for a little drive see what happens). I try to reverse the car off the drive and the damn thing wont move because the rear brakes are locked on! i haven't got the foggiest what the problem could be so thought i would ask you guys.
hope someone can help thanks rob |

One of the linings in your rear shoes has failed and broken away from the backing.... Thats my theory anyways.
Other things are, Nakcered rear adjuster, or broken springs in the rear brakes. Get your drums off and the problem will most likely be obvious. |

as marky said, get the drums off, inspect the brake hoses, pipes they could be split or rusted.
they could need bleeding up, does the pedal have a lot of play? (feels loose then about half way down feels stiff) if so, get the brake fluid changed (it's probably full of water and crap) and bleed the brakes up. hope that helped |

If its a renault 5 turbo it wont have rear drums, it'll have discs on the back.
If the pedal feels ok when the engines not running, but drops to the floor when running it'll be the diaphram split inside the bake master cylinder. It happened to me on my R5T (amongst many other things like alternator packing up, and clutch cable snapping every 300 miles) but bl++dy quick little cars. |

Does sound like a shoe has fallen apart and jammed the brake on. Its quite common.

hello people, thank-you for your responses. have just spent the whole weekend sorting this. turned out it was the brake lining coming away from the shoe on the right rear drum. was a royal pain getting the drum off but but after that was fairly straight forward. thanks to you guys again, much appreciated.
