Need advise...turbo upgrade for rb26dett
Hi guys,
I have a friend who has an R32GTR, and i'm helping him out mod his car. He wants to upgrade his turbo to raise his HP on 500-550hp range....We are opting for the twin turbo set-up to cut cost and would be a bolt-on upgrade. Can you guys recommend a twin turbo set-up that can get us on that range. We already have the FF parts... >720cc injectors >Apexi power FC >RB 20 AFM >Fuel reg >Walbro pump I saw this while browsing..... Garrett GT2560R-466541-1 (GT28R) Dual Ball Bearing Turbo w/Internal WG Any comment on this pair of turbos? One last thing...Do we need to upgrade the IC set-up? TIA |

If its just for road, go with GT-SS turbos (or Garrett equivalent). If you want more top end power go with 2530s (or Garrett equivalent).
Those Garretts will have a little more lag than 2530s, but more top end power. It all depned on what you want to live with for the car. Those 2560s will be dogs under 4500rpms. Stock IC is good for 500-550ish hp |

twin turbos:
GTSS or R34 N1 turbos ~500bhp, or hks 2510 or R32 N1 turbos [bigger than 33 or 34 version] ~550+ bhp, or you got the 2560-5 or hks 2530 for ~600 bhp. Stock IC can be used at 600bhp on a well mapped car. [ I am basing this on a stock R34 intercooler, not sure if the stock R32 intercooler is the same?] |

you do NOT want to use those turbos you linked.
You want to use GT2860R-707160-7 if you know that you will never want more than about 450whp,or your 550 fake "brake horsepower". If you want more, get HKS GT2530's or the GT2860-5's. With the -5 and good cams, you will be rockin' at about 4 grand or a little less. >RB 20 AFM >Fuel reg >Walbro pump Throw these parts in the garbage. Z32 is the best choice, followed by RB25, and Nismo AFM's. RB20 are not the way to go, IIRC. Your stock fuel pressure regulator is fine. Walbro fuel pumps are garbage, do not put one in a GT-R. They are a downgrade from the stock fuel pump. Buy a Tomei/Nismo or a Bosch 044. SkylineUSA is Correct a stock IC is good to around 500hp, however, a good quality intercooler will net less pressure drop and better cooling. turby, the R34 IC is better than the R32/R33 IC's they are not the same. |

Thanks for all the post! It's a big help... Samuraisam, So I really cant use the RB20???? I just dont want to dump it since i paid $180 for both. AS for the Turbo....I just noticed that the one i like isnt a bolt on upgrade...Is the GT2860R-707160-5 the same as the GT2860R-5 you're talking about. Im really a newbie here and not familiar in anyway with nissan upgrades. Thanks for taking time to reply. |

The green stickered RB20 AFM is the same at the RB25 AFM /
I ran those for ages on my car. If you are going to buy a pfc, just buy the d-jetro and dont even use afm's unless you specifically want to buy new afm's as well as a new ecu,in which case yes z32 80mm or nismo ones. 2860r-5's make more power sooner than 2530's but less later. GT-ss's would be the way to go if you want to make a good 550hp Im not too sure if 2510's are still available. Probably better off using the "Search" button and making up your own mind from the very large database on this subject http://www.gtr.co.uk/forum/upload/se...archid=2192497 Last edited by GT-R Glenn; 1st July 2008 at 03:14 AM. |

I haven't seen anyone "Upgrading" to RB20 MAF's on their GT-R I am assuming it is because the Z32/Nismo/RB25 are superior? I know there are a few types of RB20 and a few types of RB25 AFM's.
Yes the turbos you used would not be a good match airflow wise for the engine and also a huge pain in the ass to install. Yes, it's common to drop out those middle numbers and just refer to the turbos as -5 or -7. Backwards from what you think the -5 are the "Larger" turbo. There are 2 really good debate threads titled GT-SS or GT2530 and alson -5 or -7. There is lots of good reading material on this forum and on the Freshalloy GT-R forums too. The "Search" function is your friend. You're welcome ![]() |

NO worries, I used to no the sticker numbers off by heart ....
![]() Theres 3 different rb20 types and 2 different plug types. Problem is, like I had was, they are all quite old now, unless you buy brand new ones but they are expensive & like I have said before , all the problems I ever had with my car were usually afm based. My mistake was changing to d-jetro when I already had a pfc pro, and then finding out theres not as many cool functions on the d-j as there is on the pro (like launch control) I should have just shelled out for 2 nismo afms and kept my pro ..... Anyway, no point in getting older if we arnt getting smarter ... ![]() Dont you just love google... Wtb : Rb20det Or Rb25det Afm - Skylines Australia |

I chose 2860-7 (GT-SS equiv) which I am slighly regretting.. they will make the 550fly figure... These turbos will be able to be run on full potential on a Un-opened RB26...
This is where the problem lies thought... When the motor goes pop and you rebuild with forgies, pump and galleries. Your new motor will be able to support much more power then the turbos can deliver and if your a horsepower junkie you will feel robbed in the long run ... Just some thoughts.. meh.. if mine pops im going T04z !! ![]() |

...
Guys,
Thanks again for the replies....after reading the debate on the -5 and -7....We're going for the -5 since HP is on top of the list....as for the afm I guess I'll try to run the rb20s for the mean time and if it's such a PIA, I'll slap the stockers and if in time budget permits buy a z32 afm and other mods. I'll keep you guys posted as soon as the parts come-in. Drive safely! |
