advice needed (lots of questions)

Right first off ill introduce myself: Im John , nice to meet you ,now on to the serious stuff.

I am going to buy a r32 gtr but, as always there are other things to think about.
Im not actually going to buy the car for a while mainly because i dont want to rush things but also because the longer I leave it the more money i will have.

I will have in the reigon of £6000 not including the £1500 its going to cost me to insure it, is this enough for a 'good' r32 or am i going to land myself in a world of pain ?

Im not really bothered if its modified but lots are and some clean standard cars seem to be fetching more that some stage one(ish) examples (the joys of it becoming a classic ) what would you chose ? ( silly question ?)

The main advice given on this forum is that the turbos and gearbox are the things to watch out for, also a compression test is a good move(but when isnt that the case) ive also heard tell that thrashed examples tend to have no paint on the inlet manifold due to heat , is this the case or is it just general wear and tear ?

I was told the rear wheel steer can be a problem as they dont know the difference between kph and mph once converted but a hicas lock kit can fix this, is there anything else I can do so I can enjoy its natural goodness ? or is it ok ? to be honnest im thinking take it off

Is there anything else particual to the skyline I should look out for ?

what are the running costs ? obviously not cheep but are they attention seekers when it comes to all the little bits and bobs , can they be worked on by a good experianced mechanic ? if not im very near APT , anyone had good or bad experiances with them ?

My current daily driver does 20mpg so am i in for a plesant surprise or a nasty one ?

IS there anyone near norwich Who would like to show me around a tidy or even bad example so I know what im looking at before I start falling in love and waving cash around ?

Thanks for your help In advance and sorry about all the questions I would just like to forfill a dream not live a nightmare .

BTW . MOOKISTAR YOU FACTS ARE BRILL, THANK YOU

John

I reckon you'll need at least 6500-7000 to find a good one mate, and theres a couple of guys on the forum that aren't too far from you
I get about 160-200miles to a tank, depending on how its driven although mine is running rich

If you're confident of your own inspection abilities from knowledge learnt on a forum - use the search button. I'd recommend taking whatever car you're interested in to a reputable tuner for them to give it a decent inspection. You don't want to buy a shitter...That'll quickly cost in excess of what you have saved if you get it wrong. I saw a lot of rubbish which was described as "mint" before I eventually got mine.

What do you guys think of this ?

Nissan : Nissan Skyline R32 GTR RB26 N1 turbos.

its very close to me AND in my price range , dont supose its a members car ?

my concerns would be:
1. the seamingly low price
2. the lack of air filters
3. the exhaust leak , but i could fix that no prob.
4. engine life at that boost level.

thanks in advance. John

i picked mine up for £5000 mate and is a bril example, depending on weather you want it standerd or how high the milage is going to affect the price i brought mine at 125,000 km which is high but a rebuild would sort that, just find one you like and realistacly think bout what you would need to do to it

put it simply, for every dollar you put in the gas tank you put an equal amount for maintanance.

Really ? That bad ? Even if your a skilled mechanic not afraid to get stuck in ?
I went and test drove the above car tonight felt really tight , no problems with the gearbox , oil pressure sat at 3 at cold idle , spotless oil ect steering seamed heavy though is this normal ? Oh and having never driven even a standard one before , my god that was quick , i think im gonna have to buy a stage one car now :-)

skylines are no more or less reliable than any other kind of car. If it is looked after well, and mechanically sound then you wont have many problems to worry about.

If you start to modify it well outside its original intended use (i.e. above 400~) then this may start to be compromised and should be budgeted for accordingly. If its a high miler, then sure.. a rebuild would be great, but i wouldnt bother unless it actually lets go.

Simple enough.
