Unhappy Oil Pressure Problem....?

Hey,

When i start the car the oil light comes on, usually it would go out after a few seconds, but it seems to stay on for a bit longer now, and doesnt go off till i start driving for about 20-30 seconds.

During the time when the light is on, i get no oil pressure readings from the nissan dash gauge OR my own gauge which is wired to a sandwich plate between the block and filter.

Its as if I have no oil pressure until I acutally move the car. If i leave it at idle after start up the light just stays on and no pressure readings at all.

Also, once the readings come back (on both gauges) they appear fine. Car drives normally and no funny noises...as yet

Its an RB25DET btw,

Could it be the oil pump on the way out?
Its odd for both gauges to be doing the same when there are independant of each other. Also ive just changed the oil and filter this morning, and its still doing it (Silkolene Pro S as always).

Any ideas guys?

1. Your secondary oil pressure monitor, is it electronic or mechanical?
2. What about the other two gauges on the dash, do they behave normally in this first 20-30 seconds?
3. What RPM does your car idle at?

Ian,

The other gauge is mechanical, all the other gauges on the dash work fine. Car idles around 1100ish on cold start.

Appears it may be a sticky pressure relief valve in the oil pump, doupt its anything electrical

is the relief valve 'sprung open' or 'sprung closed'?

Not sure to be honest, but its been suggest that is the problem.

I assume it would be closed, then after a few seconds of driving it opens and allows pressure to build(?)
