This is a great thread!! I don't have a Skyline my self, but most on here know the unreliable R5GT Turbo, and I'm suffering under it from time to time...
But this is a great writeup and my comment is to your copper water pipe. . Most people go for stainless pipes because of the bling factor, but the coppers ability to direct heat away is supperior by far compared to stainless steel. We've had several 'experiments' with with copper waterpipes on an old mini cooper used for streetcourse racing. Two similar build engines, same specs, except for the waterpipe on top of the engine (copper/steel). The fastest of the two, last time in Copenhagen grandprix, was the one with the copper pipe [not that placing tells anything], but the one with the steelpipe indicated heated engine after the race, whilst the copperpipe fitted cooper read normal temp - all due to a damn waterpipe. I say good choice - better cooling abilities, even though the close placing to the block! |

I've not done anything this weekend. I was laying turf..
So, here are some pics of the single throttle conversion. Eventually I'll fit my own plenum, but 1st I want to see what the nissan one is like and do a comparison. Hopefully the existing hard pipe bit will fit onto it. I've has to cut everything down alot and cut off all the unnecessary bits like the wax stat and stuff. I've also removed all the old butterflys and blanked the holes off. The end plugs are bonded in but the center plug is screwed too. I'd hate for the engine to try and eat it. Here is what the Q45 throttle used to look like. It's the 80mm version. ![]() ![]() Here is mine. ![]() ![]() With some luck, the butterfly will be operated by the ECU. The AEM will(I think) be capably of this. But even so, I've left a bit on here for a cable incase I'm wrong. Here you can see how much I've cut off. ![]() Here is the bit I cut off the plenum to try and keep the overall length somewhere near. ![]() But I'm still 10mm too long. I think I can still get the pipe on. Time will tell. ![]() There is a flange to be welded on. I think I'll 'O' ring the seal between the throttle body and the plenum. That way, I can make a thin flange and if it distorted a little, it will still seal. Here is the blanked off old throttle bodies.. ![]() I'll be fitting the engine this weekend. About time.... So more fun and frolics to come. I still need to sort a few bits out, but a fair bit can be done in the car. Water pipes and such. And hopefully, the weekend after, I can fire her up(or burn her down depending on what happens) Anyway, enough waffling. If you're bored of this thread, go and vote on one of Mycroft many and pointless polls. I'm sure he'd love that.. ![]()

You didn't say which motor you were going to use to power the throttle.
Motec recommend the fly by wire motor that is used on the M3 and the M5. I have one at home which I can give you pictures / dimensions if you need. Fly by wire is great for antilag, cruise control etc, but I am not certain that it gives quite the same level of response that you get with a throttle cable.

Thankyou John..
Moving swiftly on. The engine and gearbox are now in. Everything went to plan. It's just like the RB26. ![]() Please excuse the crap photos. The light was aweful ![]() ![]() This is the difference in engine height. STD RB26 ![]() RB30 ![]() The downpipe need to be made 40mm longer and the strut brace, well, we adjusted the height of it and now it hit the bonnet. A little now work is required yet.. There is still plenty to do but the hard graft is out the way now. By the end of the weekend, it'll be 95% done.. Yippee. And next weekend, I'll burst her into live.. ![]()

A compelling read this! Well done Andy. Your guts to just get on with the task in hand is admirable. OK, you obviously know one end of the spanner from the other but the way you improvise your way around situations is in a different league. Mind you, I suppose the real test will be next weekend? Whatever happens I'll buy you a pint when we catch up at the shows this year although from the popularity of this thread I may have to get in the queue
All behind me then! |

I've just had to delete a few posts that were basically just pointless garbage. Can responses please be kept on topic and refrain from posting random internet pictures as "jokes". This thread is supposed to be a useful resource, hence why it was made sticky, not some playground for immature goons to write loads of random shite on.
If you've got nothing to add to the thread - i.e. serious technical questions or comments - then don't add to it. Badly-written-English posts like "OMGZ YOU RULE this is just wiked sick!", etc will be deleted. Last edited by Durzel; 6th May 2006 at 02:09 PM. |

The PAS is now fitted.
The PAS bracket need a little modding. On the RB26, the top bolt goes into the head where as the RB30 doesn't due to the extra block height. ![]() I had to cut off the lug so all 3 bolt holes were the same height. ![]() Here it is fitted. ![]() My PAS pump is a modded R32 pump, not that it effects the mounting. Here is the finished plumping under the plenum. There isn't much to it really. I had already binned the idle speed bits, the oil heater/cooler and some of the vacuum pipes. ![]() I thought I'd photo the RB30 and RB26 bottom pulley crank bolts. The left is the RB26. Although the bolts are different, the pulleys are interchangable. ![]() Here is a 'getting there' photo. ![]()

Ok one post was a joke between myself and R32combat The other thread you removed so quickly was about the clutch I wanted to know what clutch Andy was using, and if he has the upgraded to the bigger cylinder from nismo As it looks similar to my triple HKS GD Pro, and I would be interested to know the results As I have not bothered with the Nismo cylinder yet And yes this is a brilliant thread, and Andy is a nice guy But to remove my post asking about the above is unreasonable ![]()

That copper pipe just looks plain nasty man. Get a puka stainless one made up... not for the bling factor (even though it's an added bonus) but more for that sense of security it anit gonna fail. Should cost no more than £30-£40 to get made up. Just mah 2p

Neeltec,
I do seem to be getting some flak for my choice of copper water pipe. But as long as it does the job, it'll stay. Maybe I could paint it red John, Durzel and I agreed on the outset of this thread to keep it on topic so others could use it as a guide if needed with all the comments at the end.. Hence the cropping, not aimed directly at you, you big soppy Bear. Anyway, my clutch IS the GD pro and I am looking at getting the Nismo clutch slave so my wife can drive it easier. You mentioned £60. Where from. Really I need one by next weekend. Was that a UK price?
