I have owned a supra 6 spd for approx 3 yrs. It started life as twin turbos when i got it but ended up with a hks to4r .96 a/r. I made just over 580 bhp @1.4bar boost on stock internals and ran it hard.
I will say that i have seen a few rb26 engines in the past and own a r33 gtr currently and as a comparison both are good with the 2jz slightly ahead. 2 jz has tons of low down torque compared to the rb26 which is happiest at higher revs. 2jz is the best for a road car with all that torque and rb26 best for what it was intended for racing. Both are just as good as each other but the fact is they were both designed for completely different purpose's, one a fast road engine and the other a race engine. Conclusion.....on the road a 2jz and on track a rb26.....just my 2 cents. |

Stock engine only - 2JZ
Stock car only - R34GTR - personal choice but IMHO they do feel a lot more modern, and a better drive overall, if rather slow and heavy. Mildly modified car circa 500bhp would be Supra purely because it drifts great at this point and all the JZ'd cars I have driven always feel so effortless Outright modified engine would obviously be the 2JZ as its simply sooooo strong and the extra cubes help - and before someone says RB30 dont forget you can take a JZ to almost 4 litres if you want !! Outright modified car would still be R34GTR, purely because I'd want the extra control Attessa gives, and still retains basically RWD behaviour but with the ability to extract more performance more of the time than the Toyota !! Ideally have a couple of each J. |

I'm an RB fan through and through but I still respect the power some of the Supra guys are getting.
I'd say the most powerfull RB ever built would probably be around 1600hp but I know of one Supra motor with over 2000hp (big capacity difference though, 2.6/2.7 to 3.4) If you have plenty of money it seems both motors have great potential but in the 1000-1500hp range it seems the Supra motor is probably easier to get that power and its more reliable. I used to work for a Lexus main dealer when the MK4 Supra came out and was one of a very few in the UK who did the new model training for it.
Now which is best RB or 2JZ for me up to 600 bhp the RB from 600bhp 2JZ and for max bhp the RB again. Based on cost and reliability

Yep , I think that tree companies competed to get the contract, the german, a japanese and an american. The german won as they had the fairest price, the japanese one sunk after with the bubble burst in 1990.
![]() What is nice with the design of this engine is that it is probably one of the best TT S6 engines in world and that quality was achieved with combining knowledge and "know how to do" of many companies around the world. That's the main achievement of the thing. . . then one maker trying to make every thing on their own , because the chief engineer heads are to proud to out source jobs on the main frame production . . .

ive read mostly all of the posts in this thread and have found it totally inteesting. I love these debates as it really gets people thinking and it has done just that to me. I love the GT-r's (full stop)! i think that they have been a motoring phenomenon throughout the years BUT.....yes theres a but, they are limited, the whole 4wd, limited stock power, reliability issues all worry me sometimes.
Im trying not to just slag a car here but i want my opinion out. I have a Mk 4 Supra, stock bottom end, last dyno 698hp at the rear wheels. And i know a lot of people would reckon that the 4wd of the gtr is better but i have the geometry set up so well (i believe) that i dont think any 4wd performance car could leave it, even the GTR 35! with the saem driver on same conditions. my car has done a 7:40 around the ring, (which i know isnt the be all and end all but its a good judge of a cars performance). I believe that Toyota simply got it all right with the JZ engines as they, time and time again imbarass the most holy of holy cars around where i live. This may all be bulshit but just my 2pence, the local 997 turbo nearly ost his log book last week when he thought he could take the supra, only good nature give him it back!! |
