Disturbing Noise from turbos
Had the GTR out for a nice long run last weekend and have noticed a rather disconcerting noise when it comes on to boost.
I'd noticed it last week when i took her out the drive but assumed it was because it wasn't fully heated up. The noise used to go away after a few miles but if i stopped for 10 minutes or so, even if i left the car running, the noise would come back,??????????! Now its there all the time, louder when i first hit the boost and getting quieter when its on full chat! Ok going to try and describe the noise! It goes R r r r r r r r like if you roll your "Rs" Just getting abit of the Skyline paranoia too, scared sh!tl3ss incase a turbo goes poop and wreaks the engine! Wouldn't say it was down on power or really smokey either! Please help, only got her registered 3 weeks ago! |

are you down on power? What does your boost gauge read under full throttle?

Ohh poop!
Is there anyway of knowing which ones fecked without pulling them out? Are both the front and rear turbos the same? Will there be play in the shaft if its knackered? Sorry for the lack of knowledge when it comes to the GTR but not had it that long. Does not feel down on power at all, as for the boost gauge it has a row of aftermarket gauges fitted but no boost gauge ![]() |

i had a very disturbing noise last weekend from what i thought was a turbo.
it only happened when the car made boost, went away when the car dropped off boost and had me thinking the worst, The car was still making the same boost pressure just as quickly as it had done before the noise so i didnt wanna beleive that a turbo had gone faulty but it definatly sounded like it. on inspection i noticed that my ac belt was loose and my alternator belt wasnt the tightest, tightened them both and problem solved, 1 huge sigh of releif later and i was loving my GTR again bring on some mapping ![]() |

Ment to update this thread but just been busy loving the GTR again! Noise has dissapered!! Had her out most of Saturday and again Yesterday and no nasty noises at all! Puting it down to lack of use, think the cars lucky to have done 200km since it was imported in September! Big smiles all round! Need to think what to spend the money i'd put by for replacing the turbos on now!

Ok, noise back with a vengance!
Really odd one this, seems to come on with boost but on the odd occasion have heard it just after starting up and pulling away around 1500rpm. but tends to go away pretty quickly and only comes back when on boost! Stripped the pipework off around turbos and intercooler and there seemed to be quite a bit of oil in them, but not much play in the shafts of the turbos about 1-1.5mm some oil in turbos too. Also checked the breather pipe between cam covers and no oil at all! Dont want to pull the turbos off and replace incase its not them thats knackered! Please help! Cheers Sean |

Seeing as your half way to getting them off i would and get them inspected,
better being safe than if a bearing collaspe and blade breakin and entering engine, causing more damage. what colour is the smoke out of the exhaust on startup, then warm let tickover for 20 mins tap throttle check colour again, could be an oil seal |

I was just wondering whether you just had a noisy boost control solenoid - I can hear mine when driving along on part boost. I don't know what the stock one sounds like though - or whether there even is one as stock?
The noise mine makes could be decribed as "R r r r r r r r" in the way you say.

hi i had a turbo problem with my gtr 2 yrs ago at cruising speed in fifth if i floored it between 2000 revs and 4000 revs the car would jerk a small bit and i could hear a dull groaning noise from the passanger side of the engine,i guess you could describe it as a rrrrrrrr noise
also the boost gauge would rise and drop a tiny amount in syncro with the jerking i spent months trying to solve this problem the turbos appeared perfect no shaft play or bearing noise eventually i got so sick of pricking around with it that i ripped out the turbos and got them steeled in turbo technics even the guy that built the turbos in turbo technics said he couldnt find any issue with the turbos however when i fitted the rebuilt steel turbos the problem was eliminated i reckon all it takes is for one turbo to become a small bit weaker than the other to cause problems thats my opinion |
