my Evo 1

hi all. I know no-one cares, but what the heck!

my Evo 1 RS rally car is getting re-mapped tomorrow (Saturday here) by the infamous Andre from Speedtech in Wellington.

moreover, it's being done @ Dynapack in lower hutt. Yes, the guys that make Dynapack dynos are "loaning" me a brand new 4WD dyno setup to tune my rally car in preparation for an event later this month!!

Many many thanks to Canman for setting this up

may post some photos and maybe youtube a video or 2...

mmmkay. well, nice to see some interest! I promise you'll get pics - though I have to edit them first as their is some commercially sensitive stuff in them. All will become clear!

Anyhoo - the good news!! car is tuned and goes like a cut cat!! Tuner (Andre Simon from Speedtech) came out with the classic quote of the century!!

After 6 or so dyno pulls to check existing fuelling etc I saw him shaking his head... I wandered over to see what was the matter and he says ....

"This is the worst tune I have ever seen. How did you drive this???'

Coming from him, that's quite a statement!

To explain. When I first got the EvoLink G3, I did the installation and had it tuned locally (was short notice) by a "reputable" tuner. He managed to extract 156HP at the hubs. I was disappointed to say the least, having just spent the best part of $12K on engine and turbo rebuild!!

So - despite having done 3 competitive events in the car - it was tuned like a P.O.S!! Problems resolved today include...

rubbish boost control (now being handled by the Link computer)
Base timing waaaaaay out (so bad that it was firing ATDC on boost!! Andre was surprised my new motor hadn't grenaded itself!!)
wrong plugs (had NGK iridiums @ 6 heat range - now has NGK racing plugs - 9 heat range)

So, next event is 28th of this month - will be interesting!! Took the car for a quick squirt up the road, and boy does it pull!! We made a 60% increase in torque and 90%+ increase in power!! up from 110kw to 205kw at the hubs!!

Jeezus! - Improvement or what 90%+ increase - I take it it's not going back to the previous tuner then - any pics?

well, just to prove the (expensive!) tune was well worth the money, came 3rd today at a gravel sprint out of 32 cars - only beaten by an Evo 6 Gp. A rally car driven by a quick guy, and a GTiR pulsar driven by an older chap who has had the car for years, lives not far from the road and knows his car very very well! and at that, only by half a second!

so I'm well chuffed!

the best part is that it was doing the angriest launches (according to a number of people watching @ the start line) anti-lag on full noise, and it just pulls everywhere, in all gears at any rpm!! pick another gear, bang! it throws you back in the seat and just keeps pulling! took a few of the lads for rides and they were well impressed!! knocked 7 seconds off my practise run time on my last run, which is not bad over just 1.5km!

In case you can't tell, I'm pleased!

Stachi, hubs were covered as they were development units and didn't have their usual covers on. Didn't want to show any secrets considering we were there as a favour to me.
