Possible iPod/iPhone thru audio....

Right folks.

I know many of us are awaiting some substance on the old "let me play my ipod/iphone tunes thru the ruddy stereo" problem.

I've been doing some digging (as usual) and I may have a neat solution on the way.

Physical connection into the AV unit is a non-starter as I doubt many people would want to open up their AV unit.

So, I've decided to go down the FM modulation route. This will involve connecting your iPhone/iPod to a unit which will patch audio into the radio aerial directly.

This will involve accessing the rear of the AV unit and swapping a plug, and attching 12v/ground to the unit. You will then get RDS info on track name/artist on the MFD by tuning your radio into a set frequency, but still no ipod control from the steering wheel.

This will provide CD quality sound and shouldnt be confused with crappy fm transmitters.

I have the parts on order and should get a chance to test this out the weekend of the 4th July.

Total cost of parts should be around £100-£150 and fitment should be relatively easy.

If it works as I hope, I will publish instructions and links to the parts.

Wish me luck!

Forgot to also add that if this works, it should be possible to add A2DP bluetooth streaming for an extra £20 or so.....

Inspired! Sounds like a great compromise solution... I'm very interested in the parts list you have planned, and I'm more than happy to run experiments on my car if it helps - I get it tomorrow at 8:00

Yep. I've received the fm modulator stuff, just waiting for the Nissan aerial adaptor from the US. Then we're good to go next weekend!

Yep you guessed it!

Nissan uses a 3 wire aerial plug, just to complicate matters!

It arrived today so I'm gonna have a fettle with everything tonight (hopefully!)

Andy

Are you taking the dash (radio/screen) apart to do this? If so can you take pics and notes?! I am planning a dry run of this procedure on Sunday, and am happy to document, but would benefit from your superior skills and excellent notes (your Zele light kit instructions were superb) if you do it before then...

Thanks

Sorry buddy, I was only intending on removing the AV unit from under the RRR switches. The MFD will stay where it is.

Had no time tonight so it will have to wait until the weekend.

As for your install, check your PM in a mo, as I'll send you something which will help.....

UPDATE!

Just an update for those interested in iPod/iPhone music thru the OEM audio unit.

I originally tried an RDS based FM Modulator as I thought the idea of track details being displayed on the radio was good, but removed it because the unit required me to use a little remote to select the tracks, and also the iPhone display blanked out with the "Connected" screen. Also my iPhone 3G didnt charge.

So I ordered a Dension unit, the Ice Link and have just swapped the 2 units over.

This unit beats the RDS based system as

1. I can select tracks on my iPhone rather than a little remote.
2. My Iphone 3g charges now
3. The system comes with a cradle, albeit a tight fit for the 3g.

All in all I can recommend this unit for easy connectivity thru the aerial of the OEM audio system.

In order to patch into the Nissan aerial, you'll need the following adapter.

Nissan Aerial adapter

Service was perfect as ever from these guys BTW.

The aerial socket is easily accessible from the driver's side by removing the side panel of the centre console, as it is situated at the outermost edge on the RHS of the back of the av control unit.

To remove side panel..

1. Slide out flimsy silver uprights either side of av unit
2. Pop up centre console piece, starting at rear working way forward. Leave armrest upright.
3. Pull side panels outwards starting from the front, taking care at the rearmost part as there is a hook onto the next panel towards the rear.

Pictures...

Now I just have 87.7 as my #1 FM preset and its iPhone music a go-go!

As ever, if anyone decides to install this for themselves I'm more than happy to provide advice.

Also if there is sufficient demand, I can do another "install with pics" at the weekend.

Enjoy!

This is great, thanks.

I have exactly the same in my Z06, even the same FM frequency.

But I'd never dream of trying to do it myself. So, question, does anyone know who might do this for a fee? (And yes I want to keep my warranty, but this doesn't seem to have anything to do with whether the gearbox falls apart etc. etc.).

The sound is very very good. I like the fact I can control the tracks from the iPhone and it charges.

I'll post install pics this weekend when I get a mo.

Hi All

Been lurking for ages but had a question to post so thought I would first say hello. Picked up my DMG Premium R35 a few weeks ago and simply love the car. Had a Z4M Coupe & an M3 over the last few years but the GTR is just in a different league. Performance is just streets ahead of the BMWs and the build quality is excellent.

I often found the BMWs didn't get a great response from other drivers but the response to the GTR is fantastic - I've had people leaning out of their car windows to take photos, people shouting "nice car" from the street as I drive past and got a round of applause from a group of lads down on Tynemouth front street, which was nice !! Just loving the car and always finding excuses just to go out for a blast. It's also taking me much longer to get to & from work - find the longest way I can just to stay in the car

Following Charles Charlie's instructions (many thanks), I've fitted the Zele 4 light kit (nice & easy) and have gone down the route of the Denison Ice Link for playing music via iPhone. I bought the aerial adapter and have got the panels removed and sorted out the aerial connections ( I think) but, and here's my question, I can't fathom out how to power it. The Denison kit come with the cables splice things but I don't know which cables within the car to draw the power from - any help with this would be much appreciated.

Anyway, thanks for all the advice & info that gets posted on this board - it's been a fantastic read over the last year or so while I waited for the car to arrive and I'll contribute more myself from now on.

Cheers

Gav
