Y-pipe designs

Been looking at non-resonated y-pipes and have noticed that their seems to be a number of different designs on the market, main differences seem to be how far back the pipes merge, just wondering does anyone have experience with what difference this makes, I'm a Mech Eng myself and would have assumed the running dual pipes as far back as possible would be best as essentially it means you have a larger capacity mid section and you back pressure head has a larger distance to accumulate, however the more popular brands seem to have shorter dual sections, wondering if perhaps there are resonance issues etc?

We found the position of the y had more of a impact on noise than back pressure. Our new larger diameter y pipe has the join moved closer to the end to squeeze in large silencers.
