Crank sensor

Can any one explain to me what exactly does a crank sensor do?? I am just trying to understand more about what its job is.

On most cars it simply tells the ECU when the crank is at TDC or some pre-determined point before so the ECU can time events such as firing the injectors and spark plugs, In many ways a similar function to what points used to do.

Also, By counting the pulses the ECU can calculate engine revs.
