New BHP tax in Italy

I was reading through the April edition of Evo and came across an article by Harry Metcalfe (page 027) which is quite worrying.

Apparently in Italy as from Jan 1st they've introduced an annual BHP road tax where any car above 248bhp is taxed at a rate of 20 Euro (£17) per 1 BHP. E.G This means that an MY2012 550 BHP GTR would incur an annual road tax bill of 6,040 Euros on top of the standard road tax (£5,134 Plus usual road tax equivalent for us) The article says this has caused the near collapse in new Evo type car sales in Italy.

I hope Italy haven’t set a precedent here and the rest of the EU follow their lead.....................

So Italy, the producer of Ferrari (and the new 740bhp monster) have introduced this...

oh!

that must have hit the sale of performance cars, surely that would price 95% of people out owning cars like ours, I know I wouldn't pay £5K per year road tax.

Ouch, the value of ours cars would massively drop when suddenly 1000 GT-R's go up for sale at the same time, or anything really with moderate performance over 350+bhp
