well i thought i'd start a fresh new thread as my build project has taken a new twist.......

old thread https://www.gtr.co.uk/forum/140514-pr...bon-black.html

as you can see the rear arches were shot so instead of replacing them with new 1/4's at aprox £500 per side plus labour costs to fit them........

my very good friend Mr Bobster Fourtoes had solid shell for sale which suggested a different solution ........Re-shell

so this is as agreed the photo to start things off.......

so this was taken at the start of the journey by Mr Bob Fourtoes Esq.....

as you can see the only part of the shell that needs a bit of Re-working was the n/s rear lower 1/4 its not rotted its solid but just rippled....more of that later..

so there we have it

the start of a lot of work ...but more importantly a lot of FUN !!!!

Nigel

ps this was taken half way back

hi Jaz

not sure if i'm going down the seam welding route as it's mainly gonna be a road car & not going to see much track action.......

well here's a few pics of the rollover jig.....the making of

the starting point a clarke engine stand.....

the upright's original length

the upright's with bottom bracket cut off & the new section cut ready

the new section with the bracket re welded to it

the top half slides up/down to adj the hight to cope with other shells swell as un-eaven/sloping floors etc

the bracket on front of the car......

well thats what the jig looks like at the moment......

not sure i would want it on wheels fella? is there any way of locking them? theres a lot of force when that car spins trust me. once its fixed at both ends and is up in the air, all it will want to do is turn upside down, and it will very quickly. i could only just about hold the shell on my own. if its on wheels it will slide everywhere when it spins. just something to look into fella.

Crikey Nigel, I like the theory of what you doing but as Jaz said those wheels are a bit scary for when you spin her!
I thought you'd found some wheels you were going to buy separately? (with locks?).
Also is there any way you might be able to brace the uprights a bit more? I know each stand is designed to take the weight of an engine but these are quite a bit taller now so I worry for their strength, you might want to at least put another bolt in half way up to solid things up. If I was you I'd get some way of fixing the wheels as Jaz said and first time you use it make sure your outside the garage and have a lot of mates there to help Incase there are any problems. I remember Jaz telling me how scary it was using his!
Keep the pics coming buddy!

Looking forward to this project, There are a load of roll over self build spit's on Ebay most are under £200 and have been proven to be safe and work, i used one last year (that one you could lock into any angle), here's a link not to that particular one but it looks like it would do the job...... ROLLOVER SPIT, JIG, Vauxhall Astra, Nova, Corsa, Viva, Cavalier, Magnum, Victor | eBay

Hope this helps

i understand where your coming from

if it feels unstable in any way i'll get some bracing fitted

still got a set of locking wheels (still maybe fitted if needed) as i was going to get a set of stands custom made from scratch but the cost of steel being so expensive i've binned that idea

there will be a few people there when it goes on (and when ever i need it rotated )

the reason they spin so fast is when the pivot point is not centre of the car ..ie there is more weight over the roll centre i don't think mine is any different to your in that way thats why I'm getting more bodes to help

most of the time its gonna be upside down or at 45 deg angle anyway

the wheels....on the unit one set spins and the other only goes forward/back like a pellet truck

a few photo's of other ones

oh and a special award must go to this one........

all of them are good except the 3rd one down. makes hell of a mess and doesnt do a lot.
the first one i would try and get one that fits on a grinder.

the best would be to have all of them to fit a grinder and another set for drill attachment.

another good set is the pencil shaped attachment. they sell them in halfords. good for getting in very hard to reach places.
