Test drove an MY11 at Macklin Motors NHPC

I have been debating changing my 59 plate UMS GTR for an 11 plate. Mainly so I only have to get it serviced. Once a year rather than having to drive to Edinburgh or Glasgow every 6 months.

My good lady wife and I have come to Glasgow for a few days to celebrate her 12 years of tolerating being married to me. So, yesterday on our anniversay she went shopping and I went looking at GTR's.

I contacted Macklins a couple of days before. They arranged a test drive and agreed to look after my car whilst we are down. We are staying at the Blytheswood square hotel (very nice and i can highly recommend it) which has concierge parking and I couldn't cope with letting them take my car away.

Unfortunately Macklin's sold the car I was going to test drive but had another MY11 GTR to test drive.

The test drive! Dammit! I love it! All the little changes to suspension transmission and power are very noticeable. Not convinced on the Recaro seats and I don't think the interior is any better. But, the driving experience as a whole has me planning to change. The test drive went over some A and B roads that are as rough and bumpy as back home. The change in the suspension is just enough to stop the real crashing over the bumps and pot holes.

Sam at Macklin's has been great. I am very impressed!

You have a 59 plate, 6 more months and you can service it whenever you want, it's out of warranty.

What he said. I get the impression that many owners will be changing the service schedule once out of warranty. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is nothing different about the car that means it only needs to be serviced every 12 months.

I wouldn't mind being in your position if you can happily justify spending another £20k - £25k mainly so you don't need to get it serviced as often.

Since you are so close to the end of your warranty, why not just Cobb/ecutek your current car (engine and tranny), add in some anti roll bars and save yourself 35-40k?

Truly struggle to see the worth in upgrading when you can achieve 95% of the 2011/12 for substantially less than the cost of upgrading.

Unless of course you like having a new car in which case the argument is a moot point.

I have heard some great examples of people trying to justify to themselves the purchase of a new toy but that takes the biscuit!

I agree.
I have a bad habit of changing my car every year or so. Now I have a GTR the only option is another GTR.
If Scotland had a Litchfield equivalent then I would be happy. But we don't.
I do like to follow rules so I would probably still service every 6 months even out of warranty.

At least I am not on my fourth . It is difficult to justify the additional cost. Actually I can't justify it for the changes, but it doesn't mean I won't do it anyway

The guys at Macklin were great as well

If I keep it

Litchfields suspension setup is about 3k iirc. That plus other. It's CC mentions above and you've got a my11 in disguise or better. Of course if you just want a change .....
Like how you revealed your secret for a long and happy marriage - send her shopping and spend your anniversary looking at cars. Good formula!

You can have my 2011 suspension for £2100. It's got 560 miles on it, but am hoping to make that 1000 by the end of the week.

Kilted,
Is it the red MY 11 car you are after. I think its a good buy, if it is ?. Had a go at this car myself around the 1st March time, but was unimpressed with the chaps there, in regards to returned calls etc, but im sure the car will be just fine, regards, SIMON.

I was looking into that red one as vibrant red is my first but for some reason they don't look that appealing on the enhanced models.

I to was dealing with sam from macklin as far as I know the red one is sold. Did you by any chance test drive the black one they have up there??

I keep considering the change to a MY11 for no good reason myself I've got the added downside that I have nismo exhaust and wheels on mine and am not sure as to whether I would want to swap them over or whether the dealer would even want to!

I'm am 100% sure I'm going to keep my MY10 for sometime yet ..... I think!

I will be buying a 59/60 plate later this year..can someone tell me what upgrades you would recommend to bring the car more inline with the 2011 model?
Many thanks in advance.

You can PM me if you don't want to take this thread of course.

Thanks again guys.

AMS alpha 15 turbo upgrade and 4 liter race engine this would be a good start then of course you would need a Y pipe

Haha, thanks for that....
Would a Y-pipe and a Ecutek remap be a good start? I have been hearing about a gearbox software update too..

Thanks for your help guys.

I almost change mine for an exige but glad I didn't. I have followed your GTR story and feel like I know you. The fact that you have ended up back in a GTR has confirmed if I had changed mine for something else I would just change back to the GTR.

In the end I never changed. The car sold before I could decide. I am quite attached to my GTR. The new one is better, but I still couldn't bring my self to do it.

Instead I have been looking at a second car form me. The GTR won't go into multi story car parks and I can't fit my road or mountain bike on it. So I am looking at an estate instead and keep the GTR. For the cost of change over to a MY11 I am not far off a Audi RS4 avant. I may go a little more sensible or just keep pinching my wife's allroad. That might encourage her to drive the GTR though!
